Blue Prince: Hovel Room Guide

The Hovel is an Outer Room you can build outside the estate, and while it looks like a rundown shack from the outside (and the inside), it actually gives you a clever little tradeoff: it swaps Gem costs for Step costs when drafting Special Floorplans.

What the Hovel Does
Special Floorplans (like the Sauna, Nursery, Shrine, etc.) cost Steps instead of Gems
You’ll still be shown the normal Gem cost, but it’ll automatically deduct Steps instead
Can only be built after opening the West Gate and accessing Outer Room slots
Bonus Details
Inside the Hovel, you’ll find a gasline valve, which is one of four needed to light the blue braziers in the Grounds
The valve is located to the right of the fireplace, easy to spot once you're inside
Like the Schoolhouse, you can only build one Outer Room per day, so plan accordingly
When to Use It
If you're running low on Gems but have Steps to spare, the Hovel gives you a workaround for pricey rooms
Works great in combination with Shrine blessings or rooms like the Nursery that give Step bonuses
Final Blurb
The Hovel might look like a backwoods tool shed, but it’s secretly a money-saver in disguise. If you’ve been hoarding Gems for something important, let the Hovel burn a few extra Steps instead. Just ignore the creaky floors and suspicious draft.
