How to Track Fish in WoW

Fishing in World of Warcraft is already time-consuming, so the last thing you want is to waste time casting into empty water when there are actual fish pools nearby. Luckily, Blizzard gave us a way to track fish pools on the minimap—but of course, they made you work for it first. Here’s how to get Track Fish in WoW.

Step 1: Get the Ability to Track Fish

To see fish pools on your minimap, you need an item that teaches Find Fish. There are two ways to get it:

  • Buy the Angler’s Guide

    • If you’re playing in The War Within (TWW) expansion, just buy the Angler’s Guide from any fishing vendor in Khaz Algar.

    • This is the easiest method—no fishing, no luck, just gold.

  • Find a Weather-Beaten Journal (for older expansions or classic-style grinding)

    • This drops from Trunks fished out of wreckage pools and schools of fish (especially in Wetlands, where drop rates seem better).

    • You can also buy these Trunks on the Auction House, but expect to open several before you get the journal.

Once you read either of these items, you permanently learn Find Fish, and fish pools will now appear on your minimap just like herbs or mining nodes.

Step 2: Enable "Find Fish" on Your Minimap

  • Open your minimap tracking options (the little magnifying glass icon near your minimap).

  • Select Find Fish (if it’s not listed, double-check that you actually learned it).

  • Now, schools of fish will appear on your minimap whenever you’re near them.

Step 3: Fish Smarter, Not Harder

Now that you can see pools of fish, your fishing efficiency just went from painfully slow to marginally less painful. Instead of casting into random water, move between pools to guarantee you catch specific fish.

A few tips:

  • Wetlands is a good spot to farm Weather-Beaten Journal if you still need it.

  • Fishing vendors in Khaz Algar sell Angler’s Guide, so just buy it if you have TWW.

  • Trunks from wreckage pools can also contain useful loot besides the journal, so it’s never a total waste.

Final Blurb

  • Easiest method: Buy Angler’s Guide in TWW.

  • Older method: Fish up a Weather-Beaten Journal from Trunks.

  • Turn on Find Fish in your minimap tracking settings.

  • Fish in pools, not open water, to get better catches.

Now you can stop fishing blindly and start catching actual fish instead of soggy boots.
