Hytale: Animal Breeding And Taming Explained
Animal breeding and true taming are not implemented yet in Hytale, even though animals react to food and show heart particles. You can lure, capture, and temporarily interact with animals, but you cannot currently tame them, breed them, or create permanent pets or mounts.
This guide explains what actually works right now, why feeding animals feels confusing, and what systems are planned but inactive.
Is Animal Breeding Available In Hytale
No. Animal breeding is not functional in the current early access build.
Feeding animals does not cause reproduction, pairing, or offspring creation. There is no hidden condition or correct food that unlocks breeding.
If you are trying to breed chickens, pigs, horses, or other animals, the system simply does not exist yet.
Can You Tame Animals Right Now
No. True taming is also not implemented.
Animals may follow you, display heart particles, or react to food, but this does not create ownership. Horses cannot be permanently tamed, and dismounting does not bind them to you.

Why Animals Show Heart Particles
Heart particles are misleading right now.
They indicate attraction or luring behavior, not breeding or taming. This is most commonly triggered by Feed Bags or specific foods.
The presence of hearts does not mean progress toward ownership.
What Feeding Animals Actually Does
Food is used to lure animals, not tame them.
Holding certain foods will cause animals to follow you. For example, carrots can attract rabbits or horses, but this only affects movement behavior.
Once the food is gone or you move away, the animal loses interest.
Using Feed Bags
Feed Bags are crafted at the Farmer’s Workbench and are meant to draw animals toward a location.
They prevent some smaller animals from fleeing and make it easier to keep them nearby. Feed Bags do not tame animals and do not enable breeding.
They are best used for positioning animals, not controlling them.
Capturing Animals With Capture Crates
You can capture small animals using a Capture Crate.
This allows you to pick up animals like chicks, piglets, and rabbits and move them to your base. Captured animals are not pets and do not breed.
This is currently the only way to reliably relocate animals.
Why Horses Feel Especially Frustrating
Horses can be ridden, but not owned.
When you dismount, they do not stay bound to you. This is intended behavior for now and not a bug.
Permanent mounts are planned but not active.
