Is Defense Worth It in Clair Obscur Expedition 33?

Defense and Vitality both sound great on paper. But in Expedition 33... things aren’t always that simple.
What Does Defense Actually Do?
Defense reduces incoming damage. The higher your Defense, the less damage you take from hits. Simple.
Vitality increases your max HP, letting you take more hits before going down.
Are They Worth It Early, Mid, and Late?
Early Game:
Yes. Defense and Vitality can save you from random minion hits that might otherwise one-shot squishier characters. Especially on higher difficulties.
Mid Game:
Still helpful, but returns start to slow down. Many enemies and bosses start hitting so hard that extra Defense or HP only delays the inevitable... unless you’re stacking a lot.
Late Game:
This is where things change. On harder fights, enemies either one-shot you no matter what or you’re expected to parry/dodge. Defense and Vitality stop being reliable survival tools and mostly just become damage stats if your weapon scales with them.
Are There Any Exceptions?
If your weapon scales with Defense or Vitality, stacking them will boost damage too. That’s when it can be worth it even late game.
Some builds use one tankier character while the others go full damage. This can work, but most players shift to "three glass cannons and pray" or learn perfect parries.
Should You Invest in Them?
Early on: Yes. Grab at least 20+ Vitality or enough to survive basic hits.
Later on: Prioritize Might, Luck, and Agility unless your weapon benefits from Defense/Vitality scaling. Many players swap survival stats out completely once their gear gives enough HP or if they’ve mastered parrying.
