OSRS Sailing Giant Clam Encounter Guide
Old School RuneScape (OSRS)

The giant clam is one of the most rewarding ocean encounters, turning normal items into pearls you can add to your collection log. Here is a full guide so you know exactly how it works and how to get the best pearls fast.

How the Giant Clam Works

The giant clam appears as a random encounter while sailing. The first time you meet it, the shell is open. You give it an item, it keeps that item, and the clam sinks. The next time you find that same clam, it returns as closed with a pearl inside.

How Pearls Are Created

The size of the pearl is based on the value of the item you fed the clam. Higher value items make larger pearls. There are 11 total pearls from tiny to radiant. You can take the pearl and feed the next item immediately so you do not have to wait for another full encounter cycle.

Finding and Using the Clam

You will hear an encounter sound when it spawns nearby. Sail toward it and inspect it. If it is open, you can feed it. If it is closed, it is ready to reward you with a pearl. Click to claim it, then give the next item if you want to queue another transformation.

Feeding Rules and Warnings

The clam refuses pearls and spits them back. It only accepts non pearl items. When you put something inside, the game warns you that you cannot get that item back. Once placed inside, it is gone until it returns as a pearl later.

Pearl Value Ranges

  • Tiny pearl, item value 1 to 300

  • Small pearl, item value 360 to 1280

  • Shiny pearl, item value fixed around 2,500

  • Bright pearl, item value 3,600 to 8,000

  • Big pearl, item value 10,000 to 16,640

  • Huge pearl, item value 17,000 to 32,000

  • Enormous pearl, item value 20,527 to 83,000

  • Shimmering pearl, item value 100,000 to 140,000

  • Glistening pearl, item value 201,000 to 289,910

  • Brilliant pearl, item value 400,000 to 750,000

  • Radiant pearl, item value 950,000 plus

Using high value items is the fastest path to the biggest pearls. Don’t feed it a burb or it’ll deal 5 damage to you. The best alch profit right now comes from feeding a blessed spirit shield, which produces a high tier pearl with strong return value.

Extra Tips

Helpful Clam Habits

  • Always feed a new item as soon as you collect your pearl

  • Keep one inventory slot open for the pearl reward

  • Track the value of the items you use so you do not repeat pearls

Good Items for Each Tier

  • Low tier, cheap runes or bars

  • Mid tier, mid value armor or weapons

  • High tier, expensive shields or gear

Final Blurb

The giant clam is a simple loop that pays out long term. Feed it an item, find it later, and grab a pearl. Work through all 11 pearl sizes and fill your log while sailing normally. It is one of the easier collection tasks in the entire skill.
