The Sailing pet Soup is one of the newest skilling pets in Old School RuneScape. It’s a tiny turtle swimming beside your ship, and everyone wants to know just how rare it really is. Here’s what we can figure out based on other confirmed pet data and the way Jagex usually sets pet rates.
Note: Jagex has not announced the official drop rate as of yet, so we are using some confirmed data on other pet rates to help come up with our own estimations.
Estimated Drop Rate for the Soup Pet
Soup is unlocked while training the Sailing skill. Every time you gain Sailing experience, there’s a small chance to roll for the pet. The exact rate hasn’t been confirmed, but using patterns from other skilling pets and GamerBlurb math, it looks like it is probably between 1 in 110,000 and 1 in 155,000 base chance.
That range would make it roughly similar to pets like the Beaver or Heron. On average, this means you could expect Soup after around 90 to 120 hours of Sailing, depending on how efficient your XP rates are.
Remember, this is just using our best guess and our own math, and not confirmed by Jagex.
Comparison to Other Skill Pets
Here’s how the average base chances stack up across the game via most methods that we looked at (again remember we did not use ALL sampled methods for these averages).
| Skill | Base Chance (B) | Approx Hours to Pet |
|---|---|---|
| Agility | 35,000–45,000 | 130–400 hrs |
| Fishing | 82,000–1,000,000 | 100–300 hrs |
| Woodcutting | 72,000–360,000 | 100–250 hrs |
| Runecraft | 800,000–1,795,000 | 200–400 hrs |
| Thieving | 257,000ish | 180–300 hrs |
| Farming | 90,000–280,000 | 200–400 hrs |
| Sailing (estimated) | 110,000–155,000 | 90–120 hrs |
Sailing kinda falls near the middle range for pet difficulty, similar to Fishing or Woodcutting. Frequent XP ticks during sailing give many pet rolls, making it easier to hit that lucky roll over time.
Pet Chance Formula
Sailing likely uses the same pet formula used for every other skilling pet:
1 / (B − (Level × 25))
Your level slightly improves the odds per roll, but the main factor is time spent earning XP. The more you train, the more chances you get.
Best Training Methods for Pet Rolls
Barracuda or Marlin trials give the most XP and best hourly chance
Active salvaging also gives frequent XP ticks and strong odds
Charting routes and long voyages add steady passive rolls
Courier tasks are slower but still count toward the pet chance
Final Blurb
The sailing pet, Soup, likely sits around the 1 in 120,000 mark, putting it close to mid-tier pets like the Beaver and Heron. Any XP gain can trigger it, so just keep sailing and your turtle buddy will eventually show up.
Once again, this is just our best guess, and this estimate is based on our own internal math alongside some averaging/not using every single skilling method in our calculations so go easy on us if we are a little off!
Also, we’ll update this guide if/when Jagex or someone else lets us know what the official drop rate is.
