OSRS: The Red Reef Quest Guide

OSRS: The Red Reef Quest Guide

The Red Reef is an experienced Old School RuneScape quest in the Tortugan quest series, following Troubled Tortugans and sending players into Red Rock, The Last Light, The Zenith, and the Red Reef Trading Company’s mess. The quest requires Sailing, Smithing, boat travel, several combat encounters, and an underwater repair section before unlocking access to the Sacred Grove.

More Old School RuneScape guides, quest help, and progression tips are collected in the main OSRS hub.

The Red Reef Requirements

The Red Reef requires 52 Sailing, 48 Smithing, completion of Troubled Tortugans, completion of Pandemonium, and access to a boat.

The quest is listed as experienced and medium length. That fits pretty well, but the danger is front loaded into a few rough sections. The Last Light has boat combat, a multi combat pirate ambush, and the Black Eye Bethel fight close together. Later, The Zenith section adds an underwater giant lobster fight before the quest wraps up.

Requirement Needed For
52 Sailing Required for the quest and the sailing route.
48 Smithing Required for quest progression and repair related steps.
Troubled Tortugans Required because The Red Reef continues the Tortugan questline.
Pandemonium Required before starting The Red Reef.
A boat Needed to travel between the Great Conch, Red Rock, The Last Light, and The Zenith.

60+ Combat is recommended. 40 Prayer is also very useful because Protect from Missiles helps during boat combat and Protect from Melee makes the pirate fights and Black Eye Bethel much safer.

Items And Gear To Bring

The best items to bring for The Red Reef are food, Prayer potions, melee gear, Magic or Ranged gear, mahogany repair kits or better, and diving gear.

Magic or Ranged gear is useful during the pirate ship section because the pirate crews can be killed from range instead of relying only on cannons. Melee gear works well for the pirates and Black Eye Bethel. Diving gear is needed later, although Spencer Brentwood can lend some if it is forgotten.

Item Or Gear Why It Helps
Food Needed for the pirates, Black Eye Bethel, and the giant lobster.
Prayer Potions Helps keep Protect from Missiles and Protect from Melee active.
Melee Gear Good for the level 52 pirates and Black Eye Bethel.
Magic Or Ranged Gear Useful for boat combat and the giant lobster safespot.
Mahogany Repair Kits Or Better Recommended for safer sailing and boat combat.
Diving Gear Needed for the underwater dredger section.

The best restock point is the bank chest on Red Rock before sailing to The Last Light. Use it before the pirate ship fight, because that section chains multiple fights together and is not the place to discover that the food situation is embarrassing.

How To Start The Red Reef

To start The Red Reef, talk to Elder Raley at his home on the Great Conch, south of The Summer Shore’s bank.

After the opening dialogue, talk to any other Tortugan in the area and ask about Floopa. This moves the quest toward the Sacred Grove and sets up the main problem with Floopa’s injury.

Step Action
1 Talk to Elder Raley at his home on the Great Conch.
2 Talk to another Tortugan in the area.
3 Ask about Floopa.

Floopa And The Sacred Grove

After asking about Floopa, go to the entrance of the Sacred Grove and talk to Elder Katt before entering.

Once inside the Sacred Grove, speak with Floopa. This section is mostly dialogue, but it is important because the Sacred Grove becomes one of the major quest rewards after completion.

Step Action
1 Talk to Elder Katt at the Sacred Grove entrance.
2 Enter the Sacred Grove.
3 Talk to Floopa.

Red Rock And The Trading Company

After speaking with Floopa, sail west of the Great Conch to Red Rock and investigate the Red Reef Trading Company offices.

Once docked at Red Rock, go to the north western building and talk to the Receptionist. Inspect all 4 displays inside the office, then speak with Theodore Paxton. This section explains more about the company and pushes the quest toward The Last Light.

Step Action
1 Sail west of the Great Conch to Red Rock.
2 Talk to the Receptionist in the north western building.
3 Inspect all 4 displays.
4 Talk to Theodore Paxton.

While on Red Rock, inspect the Sailors’ Marker west of the bank near Shipwright Sylvia. This unlocks Red Rock as a Sailors’ Amulet destination. It is optional, but it is useful and easy to grab while already there.

The Last Light And Pirate Ships

After talking to Theodore Paxton, sail south of Red Rock to The Last Light. Before leaving Red Rock, restock at the bank chest in the north east of the island.

As the boat approaches The Last Light, 2 pirate ships appear. Use Protect from Missiles as soon as they show up, because the fight can damage the player directly. The pirate ships can be sunk with cannons, or the pirates on board can be killed with Magic or Ranged.

Fight Best Strategy
2 Pirate Ships Use cannons, or kill the pirates on board with Magic or Ranged.
Prayer Use Protect from Missiles as soon as the ships appear.
Instance The fight takes place in an instance and can be exited by leaving the area.

After docking, the player immediately enters multi combat with 6 level 52 pirates. They all attack with melee and must be defeated to continue. Use Protect from Melee to block their damage.

The 4 pirates outside can be safespotted by trapping them north of the mooring point. The 2 pirates inside can be flinched by standing just north of the staircase. After the 6 pirates are defeated, they do not need to be killed again if the player leaves later.

Do not teleport away after docking at The Last Light. Teleporting from the island after docking can cause the ship and its contents to become lost at sea. That warning is not flavor text. OSRS will happily turn a small mistake into paperwork.

Black Eye Bethel Boss Fight

After defeating the pirates, climb the staircase twice to fight Black Eye Bethel.

Black Eye Bethel is a level 191 melee boss. Protect from Melee is the main defensive prayer. She also charges a blue attack, and the player should step away when it begins.

As her health drops, she changes weapons. First she switches to a rune scimitar, which increases her max hit but lowers her accuracy. Later, she switches to a dragon scimitar, which increases her max hit again and lowers her accuracy further. During the dragon scimitar phase, she can use its special attack to disable protection prayers.

Mechanic How To Handle It
Melee Attacks Use Protect from Melee.
Blue Charged Attack Move away when she charges it.
Rune Scimitar Phase Expect higher max hits but lower accuracy.
Dragon Scimitar Phase Keep health high and watch for protection prayer disable.

The safest approach is to keep health high near the end of the fight. The dragon scimitar special can disable protection prayers, and that is where a comfortable fight can turn ugly fast.

The Zenith And The Coral Dredger

After defeating Black Eye Bethel, return to Theodore Paxton, then sail to the middle of the Red Reef east of Red Rock and board The Zenith.

The Zenith should be near where the map says Red Reef. If The Zenith is missing, hop worlds until it appears. This is a current issue with the quest, so do not waste time sailing in circles if the ship is not there.

On The Zenith, talk to Spencer Brentwood. Equip diving gear, then talk to Spencer again to go underwater. If the diving gear was forgotten, Spencer can lend some. If the player needs to return to their boat first, talk to Spencer to disembark.

Step Action
1 Return to Theodore Paxton after Black Eye Bethel.
2 Sail east of Red Rock to the middle of the Red Reef.
3 Board The Zenith. Hop worlds if it is missing.
4 Talk to Spencer Brentwood.
5 Equip diving gear and talk to Spencer again.

Giant Lobster Fight

Once underwater, go north and interact with the coral dredger. A level 112 giant lobster attacks and must be defeated before the repair can be completed.

The giant lobster has a special attack marked by blue particles appearing under the character. Move away when the particles appear. The fight can also be safespotted with Magic or Ranged by standing next to the dredger.

Mechanic Best Response
Normal Attacks Keep health safe and continue attacking.
Blue Particles Move when they appear under the character.
Safespot Stand next to the dredger and use Magic or Ranged.
After The Kill Click the coral dredger to repair it.

After killing the giant lobster, repair the coral dredger, then talk to Spencer Brentwood underwater at the east dredger location.

How To Finish The Quest

After repairing the coral dredger and speaking with Spencer underwater, return to The Zenith and talk to Spencer Brentwood again to return to the boat.

From there, return to Elder Raley’s house on the Great Conch and talk to Floopa. This completes The Red Reef and unlocks the quest rewards.

Final Step Action
1 Talk to Spencer Brentwood underwater after repairing the dredger.
2 Talk to Spencer again on The Zenith to return to the boat.
3 Return to Floopa at Elder Raley’s house.
4 Complete The Red Reef.

The Red Reef Rewards

The Red Reef rewards 2 Quest Points, 15,000 Sailing experience, 5,000 Smithing experience, access to the Sacred Grove, and the Bosun’s workbench schematic.

Reward Amount Or Unlock
Quest Points 2
Sailing Experience 15,000
Smithing Experience 5,000
Sacred Grove Access Unlocked after quest completion.
Bosun’s Workbench Schematic Unlocked as part of the quest rewards.

Partial completion of the quest gives access to Red Rock. Full completion is needed for Sacred Grove access.

Common Mistakes

The biggest mistake in The Red Reef is teleporting away from The Last Light after docking, because the player’s ship and its contents can become lost at sea.

The other common issue is not restocking on Red Rock before sailing to The Last Light. That section has 2 pirate ships, 6 pirates, and Black Eye Bethel close together, so underpreparing there can waste a lot of time.

Mistake Better Play
Teleporting away after docking at The Last Light Do not teleport away after docking unless prepared for the ship issue.
Skipping the Red Rock bank chest Restock before sailing south to The Last Light.
Forgetting Protect from Missiles Use it as soon as the pirate ships appear.
Forgetting Protect from Melee Use it against the level 52 pirates and Black Eye Bethel.
Missing the Red Rock Sailors’ Marker Inspect it west of the bank near Shipwright Sylvia.
Not hopping worlds when The Zenith is missing Hop worlds and check the Red Reef area again.
Standing still during blue attacks Move during Black Eye Bethel’s blue attack and the giant lobster’s blue particle attack.

Quick Guide

The fastest route through The Red Reef is to start at Elder Raley, speak with the Tortugans and Floopa, investigate Red Rock, clear The Last Light fights, defeat Black Eye Bethel, repair the coral dredger near The Zenith, then return to Floopa.

Step What To Do
1 Talk to Elder Raley at his home on the Great Conch.
2 Ask another Tortugan about Floopa.
3 Talk to Elder Katt at the Sacred Grove entrance.
4 Enter the Sacred Grove and talk to Floopa.
5 Sail west of the Great Conch to Red Rock.
6 Talk to the Receptionist, inspect all 4 displays, then talk to Theodore Paxton.
7 Restock at the Red Rock bank chest.
8 Sail south to The Last Light and defeat the 2 pirate ships.
9 After docking, defeat the 6 level 52 pirates.
10 Climb the staircase twice and defeat Black Eye Bethel.
11 Return to Theodore Paxton.
12 Sail east of Red Rock to The Zenith in the middle of the Red Reef.
13 Talk to Spencer Brentwood, equip diving gear, then go underwater.
14 Go north, interact with the coral dredger, and defeat the giant lobster.
15 Repair the coral dredger and talk to Spencer underwater.
16 Talk to Spencer on The Zenith to return to the boat.
17 Return to Floopa at Elder Raley’s house to complete the quest.

Important notes, do not teleport away after docking at The Last Light, and inspect the Sailors’ Marker west of the Red Rock bank near Shipwright Sylvia to unlock Red Rock on the Sailors’ Amulet.

Final Blurb

The Red Reef is a straightforward OSRS quest when handled in order, but it has enough combat and travel traps to punish sloppy prep. Bring proper supplies, restock on Red Rock before The Last Light, use protection prayers during the pirate fights, and keep movement ready for the blue attacks from Black Eye Bethel and the giant lobster.

The main reward is access to the Sacred Grove, along with 2 Quest Points, 15,000 Sailing XP, 5,000 Smithing XP, and the Bosun’s workbench schematic. The quest is not complicated, but it absolutely expects the player to show up with more than 3 sharks and blind optimism.
