OSRS Transmutation Relic Guide

OSRS Transmutation Relic Guide

Transmutation is one of the most impactful Tier 4 relics in OSRS Leagues 6 (Demonic Pacts), completely changing how you handle resources, money, and skilling. It replaces traditional alchemy with a system that lets you reshape items into higher or lower tier versions, turning almost everything you collect into something useful.

How Transmutation Works in OSRS Leagues 6

Transmutation in OSRS Leagues 6 lets you upgrade or downgrade stacks of items using new alchemy spells, while generating Magic XP and converting resources into more valuable forms over time.

When you unlock the relic, your alchemy spells are replaced with:

  • Alchemic Divergence, upgrades up to 10 items into a higher tier

  • Alchemic Convergence, downgrades up to 10 items into a lower tier

Each cast costs 1 nature rune and gives Magic XP per item. Instead of needing to supply runes, you receive the Transmutation ledger, which acts as an infinite source of nature runes while in your inventory or equipped

The system also functions like a “transmutation table” in practice. When you use items on the ledger, it shows what they can convert into, letting you preview upgrade paths before committing.

Another major difference is automation. If you cast on noted items, the spell continues recasting automatically as long as the stack stays in the same slot. This turns Transmutation into a passive system rather than constant manual casting.

What the Transmutation Ledger Actually Does

The Transmutation ledger is not just a utility item. It is the core of the entire system.

You will notice a few key things immediately:

  • It removes the need to ever carry nature runes

  • It lets you check item upgrade paths instantly

  • It enables continuous casting on noted stacks

Because it acts as an infinite rune source, you are never limited by casting cost. The only real limit becomes how many items you have available to convert.

This is what allows Transmutation to scale so well over time.

Why Transmutation Is So Strong

Transmutation is powerful because it changes how you think about resources.

Instead of farming specific items, you start treating everything as a base material that can be pushed upward. If you can gather one type of resource efficiently, you can convert it into higher tier versions within that same category.

You feel this especially with things like:

  • Mining low tier ores and turning them into runite

  • Gathering basic logs and converting them into higher tier logs

  • Picking up bones and upgrading them into better Prayer XP

This creates a loop where nothing feels wasted.

It also stacks into passive gains. You are converting items while doing other activities, gaining Magic XP and upgrading resources at the same time.

Best Uses for Transmutation

Some resource chains benefit far more than others.

High Value Uses

  • Ores into runite for strong shop profit

  • Seeds into high tier farming seeds

  • Gems into higher tier gems for crafting and alchemy value

  • Bones into higher tier bones for faster Prayer progression

These are the areas where you will actually feel the impact.

Situational Uses

  • Downgrading runes into essence for Runecraft supply

  • Upgrading hides for crafting tasks

  • Converting fish or logs depending on what you need

These are still useful, but depend more on your current goals.

Making Money With Transmutation

Transmutation becomes a consistent money method once you focus on value chains.

One of the strongest loops comes from ores:

  • Mine or gather low tier ore in bulk

  • Transmute upward into runite

  • Sell to shops for reliable gold

You can also generate value through runes:

  • Certain rune upgrades increase value significantly

  • Others lose value when downgraded, so you avoid inefficient conversions

The important part is recognizing that not every upgrade is profitable. You start learning which chains actually generate value and stick to those.

Passive XP and Background Progress

One of the biggest advantages of Transmutation is how it runs in the background.

Once you cast on a noted stack, it continues converting automatically. You are not standing still recasting. You can continue skilling, doing combat, or completing tasks while it processes items.

This leads to:

  • Passive Magic XP

  • Passive resource upgrades

  • Continuous account progression

It is one of the few systems that rewards you while doing something else.

Transmutation Or Butler’s Bell Choice

Transmutation is better if you plan to actively convert resources for scaling value, while Butler’s Bell is better if you want passive supplies without managing systems. These two relics compete directly at Tier 4, and the difference shows up immediately in how you play.

With Transmutation, everything revolves around the Transmutation ledger and its transmutation table style system. You are constantly turning items you already gather into better versions. Low tier ores become runite, seeds turn into higher tier farming seeds, bones scale into better Prayer XP, and it all runs in the background once you cast on noted stacks. You are actively shaping your account, and the more you engage with it, the stronger it gets.

Butler’s Bell goes the opposite direction. Instead of converting resources yourself, it delivers them over time. You log in, collect processed materials, and keep moving. It smooths out skills like Herblore, Construction, and Crafting without needing to think about how to supply them.

The real difference is how involved you want to be. Transmutation rewards active play and understanding resource chains, while Butler’s Bell rewards consistency and low effort progression. In my Tier 4 guide, Butler’s Bell is the safer recommendation for most players, but Transmutation pulls ahead if you actually use it well and stay engaged with the system.

You can find more info where we talk about taking Butlers Bell here, but obviously context matters and both can be decent.

When Transmutation Becomes Worth Taking

Transmutation is unlocked at Tier 4, so it comes after early progression

At that point, you already have:

  • A steady flow of resources

  • Access to multiple skilling methods

  • Enough items to start feeding the system

Early Tier 4, it helps stabilize your account by upgrading what you already have. Later on, it becomes a way to scale resources without needing to farm specific drops.

The more you play, the stronger it becomes.

Quick Breakdown

  • Unlock Tier 4 relic to access Transmutation

  • Receive the Transmutation ledger for infinite nature runes

  • Use it like a transmutation table to preview item upgrades

  • Cast on noted stacks to enable automatic recasting

  • Focus on high value chains like ores, seeds, gems, and bones

  • Let it run in the background while doing other activities

Final Blurb

Transmutation in OSRS Leagues 6 turns resource management into a scaling system instead of a grind. The Transmutation ledger removes rune costs entirely and acts like a built in transmutation table, letting you upgrade items continuously without stopping what you are doing. Once it is running on noted stacks, you start gaining Magic XP, better resources, and profit at the same time. The longer you use it, the more it reshapes how you approach every drop, making even low tier items feel valuable.
