The Birthday Boy isn’t here for fun. This strange monster from R.E.P.O.’s Monster Update fills rooms with balloons, then goes berserk the second one bursts. It may look harmless, but it’s one of the most unpredictable low-level threats in the entire game.
What the Balloon Boy Does
The Birthday Boy walks slowly through each area, stopping to inflate and drop balloons wherever it goes. It usually makes one to three at a time, leaving them scattered around tight corridors and open rooms.
Most of the time, it ignores players completely. You can walk near it and nothing happens. But once a balloon pops, it immediately changes behavior. It walks toward the sound and searches the area around the popped balloon for roughly fifteen seconds. If it finds a semibot nearby, it charges in and attacks with short melee swings that deal ten damage each hit.
It can also crawl under tables and low spaces to reach you if you try hiding. It keeps attacking until it loses sight of you or the timer runs out.
Detection and Behavior Details
Level 1 monster with 150 health and slow speed
Damage per hit is 10 when enraged
Detects through sound or sight of a balloon popping
Strength breakpoint 4, stunned breakpoint 0
Orb value ranges from $2,000 to $3,000
Anything that pops a balloon can trigger it, including semibots, monsters, or random physics objects. Sometimes it attacks you even if you didn’t cause the pop.
Tips to Outsmart the Birthday Boy
It always detects when a balloon pops, no matter how far away you are
After a pop, move fast and hide behind solid cover
Crouch under balloons to avoid hitting them, except ones close to the floor
Plan your route carefully before interacting with objects near balloons
If it starts crawling after you, lead it into open areas for easier dodging
Final Blurb
The Birthday Boy isn’t the strongest monster in R.E.P.O., but it might be the most nerve-wracking. Every balloon becomes a risk, every hallway feels like a trap, and one careless step can turn the level into a chase. Treat the balloons with caution and keep your distance if you want to leave the party alive.
