RimWorld Odyssey Temperature Guide for Ships and Gravtech

To manage temperature on your gravship in RimWorld Odyssey, use coolers, heaters, and sealed rooms. You’ll need to keep colonists alive by balancing heat, avoiding vacuum exposure, and storing food safely. This guide explains how ship temperature works and how to set up stable rooms in space or on the ground.

How Ship Temperature Works

Vacuum affects everything

Gravships don’t have natural insulation. When you fly into orbit, any room not sealed with Gravship Hull walls will be exposed to space. That means instant vacuum temperatures and no breathable air. Colonists in unsealed rooms will suffocate or freeze without gear.

Planet-based travel does not expose your ship to vacuum. You only need airtight rooms for space launches.

Heaters and coolers still work

Standard heaters and coolers function as usual. They can raise or lower room temperature as long as the room is sealed and powered. You don’t need special versions for ships.

You’ll need a power grid that supports constant output, especially for cold maps or if you're using hydroponics, medical beds, or freezers.

Building a Stable Temperature System

Use Gravship Hull walls

Only Gravship Hull walls are airtight. Use these to seal any room you want to keep warm or cold in orbit. Regular walls will not protect against vacuum. Avoid windows and unsealed doors when preparing for spaceflight.

Add a heater to living areas

Build at least one heater in every major colonist room. Bedrooms, medical rooms, and dining areas should stay between 18°C and 22°C for comfort. This keeps colonists from getting hypothermia or debuffs.

Build a freezer room

Place a cooler with the red (hot) side facing outer space. The cold side should point into a small sealed room. Set the cooler to -2°C or lower. This makes a stable freezer that works in space or on the ground.

Coolers dump heat into the vacuum without needing a vent room. Just make sure they’re powered and connected to an outside wall.

Watch door traffic

Every time a door opens, temperature can drop or spike. Use autodoors to keep open time short, or double-door airlocks if you want full control. This is helpful for freezers, heated bedrooms, or hydroponic areas.

Managing Heat in Specific Areas

Hydroponics

Hydroponics basins work best between 10°C and 30°C. If your ship gets too cold, they’ll slow down or stop growing. Use at least one heater per hydroponics room, and seal the space with Hull walls.

Medical rooms

Colonists heal better in warm rooms. Keep medical bays at 21°C with a heater. Freezing medbeds will slow recovery and boost infection chances.

Freezers

Freezers must be sealed. Open doors and colonist traffic will raise the temperature. Add extra coolers if needed, and limit access with stockpile zones or schedules.

Final Blurb

In RimWorld Odyssey, temperature can make or break your ship. Whether you’re flying across the planet or into space, seal your rooms, power your heaters and coolers, and always keep an eye on the thermometer. Your colonists won’t complain… until their lungs freeze.

FAQ

Q: Do heaters and coolers work in orbit?

Yes, as long as the room is sealed with Gravship Hull walls and powered.

Q: What happens if a room isn’t sealed in space?

It depressurizes and drops to vacuum temperatures. Colonists can die quickly.

Q: How do I vent heat into space?

Use a cooler with the hot side facing vacuum. It will dump heat instantly.

Q: Do I need sealed rooms on the ground?

No. Vacuum only applies in space. Planet launches don’t require airtight rooms.

Q: What temp should I keep living areas at?

Between 18°C and 22°C for comfort. Heaters will auto-regulate if set properly.
