Runescape Dragonwilds Steel Guide | How to Make Steel and Steel Armor

Runescape Dragonwilds Steel Guide | How to Make Steel

Steel is the big tier jump in Fellhollow. It unlocks new tools, new weapons, new armor, and the entire steel crafting path. Once you make your first steel bar, the whole tier opens up fast. Here’s how to get everything you need and make steel without missing a step.

How to Enter Fellhollow

You need access to the Fellhollow region before steel becomes possible. Complete the quest line, follow the wizard’s marker, and enter the zone through the northern door. Once inside, the real farming begins.

Step 1 - Gather Iron Ore

Iron ore spawns everywhere throughout Fellhollow, especially on cliff edges and steep mountain ridges. You can also farm iron back in Stormtouched Highlands if the new zone feels rough.

Iron is one half of the steel recipe, so gather a stack early.

Step 2 - Gather Coal

Coal is the new ore type only found in Fellhollow. Do not confuse it with charcoal.

Coal nodes appear high up on cliffs. Use spells like Rocklosion to break floating nodes or ore chunks that sit above ground. Once hit, the coal falls to the ground for easy pickup.

Coal is required for every steel bar, so grab everything you see.

Step 3 - Hunt Dragonwolves for Draconic Leather

Dragonwolves roam across Fellhollow and drop two important items.

  • Dragonwolf hide

  • Dragon blood

Take the hide to your tannery. One hide turns into draconic leather, which is required to build the blast furnace.

You only need four draconic leather for the furnace, so two or three dragonwolf kills is usually enough.

Step 4 - Build the Blast Furnace

The blast furnace is the machine that creates steel. Here are the ingredients.

  • Granite

  • Iron bars

  • Draconic leather

  • Fire runes

  • Two vault cores

Everything except the draconic leather can be collected before Fellhollow. Once built, place the blast furnace somewhere with plenty of space.

Step 5 - Craft Fuel Pellets

The blast furnace does not run on wood, charcoal, or coal. It only uses fuel pellets.

Craft them at the standard crafting table under the miscellaneous section.

Fuel pellets require:

  • Charcoal

  • Adhesive

  • Coarse animal fur

Charcoal comes from wood in the kiln, adhesive from swamp tar in the kiln, and coarse fur from early-zone animals.

A small batch is enough to start making steel, but you’ll eventually want plenty.

Step 6 - Combine Everything to Make Steel

With your furnace fueled, add the ingredients.

  • Iron bars

  • Coal

These combine into steel bars once the furnace begins running. Let the machine cycle and collect your bars as they finish.

This officially unlocks the full steel tier.

Steel Armor and Items You Can Craft

Once you have steel bars, new gear appears in your crafting menus.

  • Steel logging axe

  • Steel pickaxe

  • Steel mace

  • Steel sword

  • Steel armor pieces

More items unlock as you gather additional Fellhollow materials.

Final Blurb

Steel is the moment where Dragonwilds crafting takes off. Gather iron, blast floating coal nodes, hunt dragonwolves for hides, and fuel the blast furnace with pellets.

Once you make your first steel bar, the entire tier opens and your Fellhollow progression speeds way up.
