Unity Lays Off More Employees With 5AM Emails and Bad Communication

Unity is still cutting jobs. After already laying off 25% of its workforce this fiscal year (at a cost of $205 million), the company is apparently not done.

Reports from ex-employees suggest that more teams are being suddenly let go.

More Layoffs, More Confusion

One of those affected is Shanee Nishry, a Behavior package tech lead, who shared that their entire team was cut. For context, Behavior is a Unity tool that helps control NPCs and objects. Nishry actually created the tool in their free time before it became a core part of Unity’s engine—only to now see their entire team wiped out.

Nishry has asked Unity to open source the tool, but so far, no word on whether that will happen.

Another ex-employee, Unity lead game designer André de Miranda Cardoso, also shared that their layoff came as a total surprise.

The 5AM Layoff Emails

Adding to the frustration, some employees were notified of their layoffs through emails sent at 5AM—from a noreply@unity address.

Peter Roe, a former senior technical artist at Unity, wrote on LinkedIn:

“Receiving a 5AM email from 'noreply@unity' telling me that my role was ‘eliminated’ and that I'd lose system access by the end of the day felt completely abrupt and impersonal. Unity must do better in how they treat their workers in hard times like this.”

Ouch.

Unity’s “Reset” Continues

These layoffs are part of Unity’s ongoing “restructuring program,” which the company claims will lead to "attractive" revenue growth and better financials.

This shake-up started last year after CEO John Riccitiello left following the Runtime Fee disaster. His replacement, Matthew Bromberg, tried to rebuild trust by scrapping the revised Runtime Fee, but the company’s restructuring efforts haven’t slowed down.

For now, it looks like Unity’s reset means more job cuts—and more early-morning goodbye emails.
