Where to Find Opal in RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Opal is a shiny little upgrade material in RuneScape: Dragonwilds that players quickly learn to love... and hate. It’s used in some seriously useful gear, but it drops at random, takes patience, and sometimes just decides not to exist for a few hours.

Here’s where to find opal in RuneScape: Dragonwilds.

How to Get Opal in RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Opal doesn’t come from its own ore. Instead, it randomly drops while mining:

  • Stone

  • Tin Ore

  • Copper Ore

That means you’re not looking for a special “opal rock”—you’re just crossing your fingers while mining basic materials.

Best Tools to Use

  • You’ll need a Bone Pickaxe or better

  • Stone Pickaxes won’t cut it when mining Tin and Copper

  • Higher-tier pickaxes don’t seem to improve Opal drop rate much—just mining speed

Best Location for Opal

Your best bet is the Fractured Plains. It’s full of:

  • Stone, Tin, and Copper nodes

  • Aggressive enemies that will absolutely interrupt your mining session

Bring gear, potions, and preferably a decent exit strategy. Or a Lodestone.

Helpful Mining Skills

If you want to boost your chances:

  • Rocksplosion Spell – Blasts multiple rocks at once, good for farming

  • Gem Prospector – Unlocks at Level 16 Mining, gives a small bonus to gem drops

  • Detect Ore – Helps you spot nearby nodes faster

Opal still drops at random, but these tools help make it slightly less painful.

Known Opal Drop Bug

Once you hit Level 50 Mining, Opal may stop dropping or become extremely rare.

Why? The game starts prioritizing higher-tier ores and seems to forget about little old Opal.

Workaround:

  • Create a lower-level character and mine with them

  • Or just wait and hope the devs patch it soon (the bug is known, but not yet fixed)

What Opal Is Used For

Once you finally get some, Opal can be used to upgrade gear at the Smithing Anvil, including:

  • Oak Shortbow

  • Oak Longbow

  • Dragonfire Shield

It’s not flashy, but it’s critical for early to mid-game upgrades.

Final Blurb

Opal is like the friend who never answers texts but shows up when you least expect it—usually while you’re just trying to mine stone in peace. Bring a Bone Pickaxe, aim for Fractured Plains, and don’t forget to shout when it finally drops. You’ve earned it.
