Wildgate How to Play: Tips and Tricks
Written by Andrew Hammel | Wildgate
Wildgate is a 20-player extraction shooter where 5 teams of 4 fight for upgrades, survival, and the Artifact. To win, either escape through the Wildgate with the Artifact or eliminate all other crews before the 60-minute timer ends.
Understand the Artifact and Wildgate
The Artifact is found inside the Ancient Monolith. If your team escapes through the Wildgate while holding it, you win. Once picked up, all other teams are notified. The Wildgate appears later in the match and stays open for a short time, so be ready when it does.
Assign Ship Roles Early
Each ship has turrets, a helm, a processor, and a reactor. One crewmate should always control the helm to boost, brake, or raise shields. Another should stay near the processor to manage fuel, ammo, and ice. Assign turret users and a boarder to handle fights or sabotage enemy ships.
Use the Multitool to Install Cannons, Turrets, and Hardpoints
To install ship upgrades like hardpoints or cannons/turrets, pick up the device, go to your ship, and walk up to the install slot when the indicator appears. Interact to attach it. These can be swapped later or stolen by other players, so keep your ship secure.
Harvest Fuel and Ice Constantly
Fuel and ice keep your ship moving and alive. Use your multitool to mine pink fuel asteroids and blue ice asteroids. Fuel powers your boost. Ice repairs your ship's shields and reactor. Without both, you won’t last long.
Upgrade Your Cannons and Hardpoints
Early cannons are weak. Loot better weapons from POIs or salvage them from destroyed ships. Install hardpoint modules like shield boosts or traps as soon as you find them. Everything is replaceable, so swap based on your strategy.
Know the Prospectors
There are multiple Wildgate characters, each with unique passives. Robot types like Sal and Ion don’t need oxygen. Mophs uses camouflage. Kae can teleport. Knowing which prospectors can breathe in no-oxygen POIs or hit reactors harder can decide a match.
Secure Your Reactor
If an enemy presses your reactor’s Overload button and your team doesn’t cancel it in time, your ship explodes. You can do the same to them. Keep your reactor shielded with ice and guarded at all times.
Close Doors and Scout With Probes
Open airlocks let enemies board. Always close ship doors after exploring. Use probes to scout POIs and enemy locations before engaging. They have limited fuel, but give you vital information without risk.
Take Early Fights Carefully
You spawn near a POI. Clear it fast and get your first ship upgrades. Avoid early fights unless you have a strong advantage. Pick off isolated teams or third-party weak ones when possible.
Manage Oxygen Carefully in No-O2 Zones
Some POIs have no oxygen inside. This isn’t a problem for robot prospectors like Sal and Ion, but organic characters will need to locate oxygen vents to survive. Always check the environment before committing to a long fight or loot run.
Final Blurb
To win in Wildgate, you need good crew coordination, map control, and ship management. Know when to board, when to boost, and when to run. Whether you steal the Artifact or wipe the map, the last ship standing always wins.
