RuneScape Reignited Cancelled Just 12 Days After Reveal

RuneScape Reignited lasted 12 days.

Less than two weeks after Jagex unveiled the fresh-start experience at RuneFest, the studio has canceled it outright, scrapping plans for a separate economy, new hiscores and a second starting point for players willing to begin RuneScape again from scratch.

The reversal is unusually swift for a project that had been positioned as one of RuneScape's biggest attempts to bring back former players and attract an entirely new audience. Reignited was scheduled to launch December 2. That date is still important, but almost everything surrounding it has now changed.

Jagex Says Reignited "Missed the Mark"

Mod Ryan announced the cancellation on October 15, saying Jagex had spent the days since RuneFest listening to the response from players and ultimately decided there was no version of the current plan worth pushing ahead with.

"It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it," he said.

Reignited had been conceived as a way to recreate something increasingly difficult to offer inside a 25-year-old MMO: a genuine starting line. New Reignited characters would begin with their own economy and hiscores, separated financially from veterans carrying decades of accumulated gold, items and accomplishments.

That separation was also its biggest problem.

Jagex wanted returning players to have the experience of arriving in a RuneScape where everyone around them was building wealth and chasing milestones again. But doing that meant creating another ecosystem alongside the existing game, and the announcement quickly became a debate over whether RuneScape should be dividing its population at the exact moment Jagex is trying to rebuild it.

Jagex has now decided the answer is no.

Jagex Doesn't Want Growth to Come at the Expense of Existing Players

The language surrounding the cancellation is striking because Jagex is not presenting Reignited as a good idea that simply needed more time. Mod Ryan acknowledged that the fundamental approach was wrong for where RuneScape is now.

The goal, he said, remains getting former players back into the game and convincing new ones to give RuneScape a chance. What Jagex is no longer willing to do is pursue that growth in a way that makes its existing community feel as though the game they have spent years building characters in is being pushed aside.

That point carried enough weight for Mod Ryan to reach all the way back to one of the most consequential decisions in RuneScape history.

He said the last time Jagex failed to listen closely enough to player feedback, "combat changed forever," adding that it took the studio more than a decade to recover. The reference is to the Evolution of Combat, the sweeping 2012 overhaul that fundamentally changed RuneScape's combat system and became one of the most divisive updates the game has ever received.

At RuneFest, Mod Ryan had promised Jagex would not repeat the mistakes of its past. Less than two weeks later, the company has made one of the clearest demonstrations yet of what that promise looks like when a major announcement lands badly.

December 2 Is Still Happening, Just Without Reignited

The cancellation does not mean Jagex is abandoning the broader effort behind Reignited.

December 2 will still bring the Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey, two pieces of Jagex's attempt to make RuneScape more approachable for people entering the game for the first time or returning after years away. Other improvements originally planned around the same period are also continuing.

The difference is that those players will now enter RuneScape itself rather than a parallel version of it.

Jagex is also keeping the 10-day free membership period it had planned around Reignited. From December 2 through December 12, new characters will be able to access RuneScape members' worlds and content without purchasing membership. Existing characters are also eligible as long as they have not held active membership since June 2, 2026.

Old School RuneScape is excluded from the promotion.

It is effectively the same invitation Jagex wanted Reignited to provide, only without asking newcomers to enter a separate economy or veterans to decide whether starting over was worth leaving years of progress behind.

Mod Ryan summarized the revised approach with a much simpler pitch: "No split worlds."

RuneScape's Comeback Push Is Going Back Into RuneScape

That may be the most consequential part of the cancellation.

Reignited was built around the idea that RuneScape's age had become an obstacle. A fresh economy and new competitive starting point could strip away 25 years of accumulated history and give returning players something closer to the experience of joining an MMO near the beginning.

Jagex is now taking almost the opposite position.

Rather than building around RuneScape's existing world, the studio is putting its effort into making that world easier to enter. The Adventure Guide remains. The remastered early-game work remains. The free trial remains. The planned improvements remain. What disappears is the wall separating the new audience from everyone who is already there.

That creates a harder design problem for Jagex, because RuneScape still has to introduce new players to an MMO carrying decades of systems, currencies, quests and accumulated wealth. But it also means anyone brought in by the December campaign becomes part of the same community Jagex is trying to strengthen rather than the foundation of another one.

The 2027 Roadmap Is Not Being Cut Back

Jagex is also trying to make clear that Reignited's cancellation should not be read as a retreat from RuneScape more broadly.

The 2027 roadmap revealed at RuneFest is still moving ahead. Jagex says the schedule includes substantial combat and skilling content, the conclusion of storylines that have been running for years, a new Grandmaster quest and a rework of Agility.

Mod Ryan argued that the Reignited debate had overshadowed that roadmap almost immediately after RuneFest, pulling attention away from what Jagex considers one of its strongest content schedules in years.

With Reignited now removed from the equation, the studio is refocusing its message around what it has called the Road to Restoration: improving the existing RuneScape rather than creating a cleaner version beside it.

Plugins Are Still Launching on October 19

One major update is arriving much sooner.

Jagex confirmed that RuneScape plugins will launch Monday, October 19, with more details scheduled for the same day. The system is another piece of the studio's wider attempt to modernize RuneScape's player experience and has not been affected by the decision to cancel Reignited.

That announcement served as an unusually upbeat ending to an update centered around abandoning a major project, but it also reinforces what Jagex wants players to take away from the change: the company is canceling Reignited, not slowing down RuneScape.

Reignited Went From RuneFest Reveal to Cancellation in 12 Days

There are plenty of game announcements that change substantially between reveal and release. Very few disappear this quickly.

Jagex revealed Reignited on October 3 with a December launch date and a broader pitch about giving RuneScape a fresh beginning. By October 15, the fresh-start system at the center of that pitch was gone.

What remains is almost everything Jagex hoped would surround it: a redesigned introduction to the game, remastered early content, a temporary free membership period and an aggressive 2027 roadmap intended to give both returning and existing players reasons to stay.

The difference is that Jagex is no longer trying to build a second starting line to get there.

For now, its bet is much simpler: if RuneScape is going to grow again, everyone will have to do it in the same RuneScape.
