Shrek is heading back to gaming, and he's bringing the whole gang with him. Aspyr has announced Shrek 2 Remastered, a modern release of the 2004 action-adventure game, arriving November 10, 2026, on consoles and PC.
For anyone who spent their childhood playing Shrek 2 with friends on the PS2, GameCube, or original Xbox, this is quite the throwback. The remaster keeps the original game's character-switching combat and chaotic team-based adventure, but there's one major upgrade that could make revisiting Far Far Away a lot more fun.
The Original Couch Co-Op Is Finally Going Online
Back in 2004, getting four people together for a session of Shrek 2 meant sharing a screen and passing around controllers. That local multiplayer experience is still intact, but the remaster also introduces online co-op for up to four players.
Even better, Aspyr is supporting mixed local and online multiplayer, so friends playing together on one system can team up with others over the internet.
The game itself remains a lighthearted action-adventure where different characters bring their own abilities to combat and environmental puzzles. You'll be switching between familiar faces like Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey while fighting your way through locations inspired by the movie.
It's a welcome upgrade for a game built around playing together. After all, finding three friends online in 2026 is considerably easier than convincing everyone to show up at your house with a controller.
A Classic Console Game Gets a Modern Makeover
Aspyr is giving the adventure a visual overhaul, including sharper textures, refreshed cutscenes, an updated interface, and 4K resolution on supported hardware. The higher resolution is available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 when docked.
There's also a Photo Mode for capturing the game's ridiculous moments and a new Cheat Mode for players who want to mess around with the adventure.
One interesting detail for longtime PC gamers: this remaster is based on the original console-style co-op adventure, rather than the separate single-player Shrek 2 game that also released on PC in 2004. That means PC players will be getting the team-based version this time around.

In true Shrek fashion, the announcement trailer even pokes fun at Grand Theft Auto VI's marketing. It's an amusing way to reveal a remaster that probably wasn't on many people's 2026 gaming bingo cards.
Shrek 2 might not have been the most technically impressive game of its generation, but its simple co-op gameplay gave it a charm that's still easy to appreciate. Whether that holds up after 22 years remains to be seen, although adding online multiplayer is a smart way to give the old adventure another shot.
For now, Far Far Away is officially back on the gaming calendar.
