Abiotic Factor: Upgrade System Explained

Written by Michael Owen | Abiotic Factor

The upgrade system in Abiotic Factor lets you improve the raw stats of weapons, armor, and gear without changing their identity. Unlike the enhancement system, upgrades don't add special effects or visual changes.

They simply boost power, durability, or utility while keeping the same item name.

How Upgrades Work

Upgrades are done at a Crafting Bench or Workbench, depending on the item. You’ll need a duplicate of the base item and various materials. Every upgrade improves stats like damage, armor, magazine size, durability, or carry capacity.

You can usually upgrade gear up to +3, though some items cap earlier. Each level adds better performance, but also increases repair cost and material requirements.

Upgraded items keep their original repair item type, so you don’t need special kits.

Upgrade Examples

Weapons

  • Romag Shotgun +1

    • Increases base damage and magazine size slightly

    • Higher durability

  • Montese SMG +2

    • Faster fire rate, slightly improved recoil

    • More accurate spread

  • Energy Pistol +3

    • Max battery charge increases

    • Lower heat buildup per shot

Armor

  • F.O.R.G.E. Chestplate +1

    • +2 Armor bonus

    • Boosts durability

  • A.E.G.I.S. Greaves +2

    • +3 Armor

    • Slight speed bonus added

Backpacks

  • Research Pack +1

    • More weight reduction

    • Better radiation resistance

Upgrades don’t change crafting recipes, but they make each piece of gear scale better for late-game threats. If you already enhanced an item, you can still upgrade it afterward.

How to Unlock Upgrades

You unlock upgrade options automatically by crafting or looting gear. If you have two of the same base item and the required materials, the upgrade option becomes available in the workbench UI.

Check the preview panel to compare stat differences before committing.

Final Blurb

Upgrades in Abiotic Factor make your gear tougher, stronger, and more reliable without changing how they function.

If you like your current loadout but want it to scale better into harder zones, upgrading is the simplest way to do it.
