The Craftsmanship tree lets you keep your gear in top shape, repairing weapons, and eventually forging high-quality equipment yourself. If you invest in it, you can end up crafting some of the best weapons in the game. But to get there, you’ll need to pick the right perks.

Best Craftsmanship Perks to Get First

1. Keen Eye (Level 10)

  • Why? Free experience just for getting your gear repaired.

  • Effect: You gain Craftsmanship XP whenever you pay a smith to fix your items.

  • Verdict: If you’re not grinding repairs yourself, this will help you level up without effort.

2. Thorough Maintenance & Thorough Maintenance II (Levels 8 & 14)

  • Why? Protects your gear from permanent quality loss.

  • Effect: Your gear degrades 10% slower with the first perk and 20% slower with the second.

  • Verdict: Armor and weapons lose effectiveness over time, so slowing this down is essential.

3. Martin’s Secret (Level 16)

  • Why? Lets you forge weapons of fourth-highest quality (better than what most NPCs can make).

  • Effect: This is the goal of the tree—making the best possible weapons with your own hands.

  • Verdict: If you plan on crafting, you need this perk.

Bonus Perks for Weapon & Armor Power

4. Razor Sharp (Level 6)

  • Why? Free +10% damage bonus for weapons you sharpen yourself.

  • Effect: If you take care of your swords, they’ll hit harder.

  • Verdict: A simple but effective damage boost.

5. Hardened Steel (Level 10)

  • Why? Reduces weapon degradation by 20%.

  • Effect: The less often you have to repair, the better.

  • Verdict: More durability means less time at the grindstone.

6. Bowyer (Level 14)

  • Why? Bows and crossbows deal 10% more damage when repaired with a bowyer kit.

  • Effect: Archers will love this—it’s basically the ranged version of Razor Sharp.

  • Verdict: If you use bows, it’s a no-brainer.

Optional Perks (Situational, But Helpful)

7. Seven-League Boots & Seven-League Boots II (Levels 6 & 16)

  • Why? Stamina reduction when wearing boots you repaired yourself.

  • Effect: The first perk reduces stamina usage by 25%, and the second reduces it by 50%.

  • Verdict: Great if you sprint everywhere, but not a top priority.

8. Totally Legit (Level 12)

  • Why? Stolen items lose their stolen status faster.

  • Effect: If you “borrow” things often, this helps you sell them sooner.

  • Verdict: Thieves and traders will benefit the most.

9. Locksmith (Level 12)

  • Why? Increases Thievery by 3 when picking locks and gives you more attempts.

  • Effect: If you struggle with lockpicking, this makes it easier.

  • Verdict: Not a priority unless you’re a dedicated thief.

Final Verdict: Best Craftsmanship Build

If you want the best weapons and armor maintenance, go for:

  1. Keen Eye (For passive XP gain)

  2. Thorough Maintenance & Thorough Maintenance II (To slow gear degradation)

  3. Martin’s Secret (For the highest-quality weapons)

  4. Hardened Steel (For longer-lasting weapons)

  5. Razor Sharp (For more melee damage)

If you use bows, grab Bowyer for extra ranged damage. If you’re a thief, Totally Legit and Locksmith will come in handy.

With these perks, your gear will last longer, your weapons will hit harder, and you’ll be able to craft some of the best weapons in the game. A true blacksmith’s dream.
