RuneScape: Dragonwilds is finally out, and yes—it runs on the ROG Ally... but not without some compromises. If you were hoping for a smooth 60 FPS experience while dual-wielding spells and sprinting through vaults then.. uh.. let’s just say you’ll want to temper those expectations. This guide breaks down how the game performs on the ROG Ally and how to squeeze out the best performance.

What You’re Working With

If you’ve got a ROG Ally Z1 Extreme, you're in decent shape—but Dragonwilds is built in Unreal Engine 5, and early access + UE5 = performance soup. Even decent hardware is struggling a bit.

Recommended Settings for ROG Ally (Z1 Extreme)

  • Resolution: 720p (Native 1080p tanks performance hard)

  • Graphics Preset: Low

  • FSR or Frame Generation: Enabled (if available in settings)

  • Refresh Rate: Cap at 30–40 FPS

  • TDP Mode: 25W or 28W in docked mode for more power

  • GPU VRAM Setting: Bump up to 8GB in Armoury Crate

What Performance to Expect

  • Low Settings + 720p: ~30–40 FPS

  • Docked Mode (28W TDP): Small boost, but not a miracle

  • Frame Generation + Low Res: Might help you hit 40+ in quieter areas

  • Caves, Swamps, Vaults: Expect dips into the low 20s depending on effects and mobs

Tips to Improve Performance

  • Turn Off Lossless Scaling unless you really know what you’re doing—it doesn’t always help here

  • Avoid 1080p or Balanced settings, they’ll tank your framerate

  • Play in handheld when possible—the smaller screen hides some of the resolution hit

  • Update your GPU drivers and check for game patches often (performance may improve fast during EA)

  • If you’re stuck at a vault or crafting zone with lag, drop resolution even lower temporarily using the Ally’s settings

Final Blurb

Dragonwilds isn't optimized yet and the ROG Ally is definitely feeling it. But with the right settings, you can still enjoy the game at a stable 30–40 FPS. It’s not buttery smooth, but it's playable—and for now, that’s good enough to survive the swamp, beat a vault, and teleport back to base with your dignity mostly intact.
