Guide: How to Get Tools in Foundation

In Foundation, tools are a must-have for construction and production. But in the early game, your villagers seem to be living in a "no tools, just vibes" kind of world. Here’s how to actually get some.

Option 1: Trade for Tools (Early Game)

At the start, your only option is trading—because blacksmiths don’t trust your tiny village yet.

  • Open the Trade Menu (found in the Economy tab).

  • Find a Trade Partner that sells tools (not every trader does).

  • Set Tools to “Buy Until” a certain amount so you don’t run out mid-project.

Option 2: Unlock Blacksmithing (Mid-Game)

Once your town reaches 20 Commoners, your village finally learns the ancient art of making tools.

  • Build a Blacksmith (because, obviously).

  • Blacksmiths require iron, coal, and a worker—so make sure you’ve got those.

  • Now you can produce your own tools and stop depending on overpriced traders.

What Are Tools Used For?

  • Construction – Buildings don’t just pop into existence.

  • Production Chains – Some buildings and industries need tools to function.

Final Blurb

At first, you’ll have to beg, buy, or barter for tools, but once your village levels up, you can start producing your own. Until then, keep trading and try not to let your villagers wonder why they’re still using sticks and hope instead of real tools.
