If your controller decided to take a day off while you're trying to survive Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you're not alone. A lot of players are finding that their gamepad just refuses to cooperate on PC. The good news? There are a few tricks that can get your controller back in line.
Here’s how to get your controller working.
Disable Steam Input
Sometimes Steam likes to "help" when nobody asked. Disabling Steam Input can fix weird controller behavior.
Open Steam and head to your Library.
Right-click Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 > Properties.
Go to the Controller tab.
Under "Override for this game," select Disable Steam Input.
Test the game after this. If your controller suddenly springs to life, you know who the real villain was.
Update Your Controller
Old firmware can make your controller act like it's from 1999.
For Xbox or PlayStation controllers:
Download the Xbox Accessories App or PlayStation Accessories App from the Microsoft Store.Plug in your controller via USB.
Check for updates and install if available.
If you’re using a third-party controller, hop into Device Manager:
Press Win + X > Device Manager.
Expand Human Interface Devices.
Right-click your controller > Update driver > Search automatically.
Because even controllers need a tune-up sometimes.
Use DS4Windows (For PS Controllers)
If you're using a PlayStation controller, some games—including this one—just pretend they don’t know you.
Download DS4Windows.
This will trick your PC into thinking your PS controller is an Xbox controller.
Yes, you'll see Xbox buttons on screen, but hey, at least it works.
Enable Controller in Sound Control Panel
Yes, this sounds weird. No, I don’t make the rules.
Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.
Plug in your controller.
Find your controller in the list, right-click it > Enable.
Right-click again > Configure Speakers.
Select Quadrophonic, then click through and finish.
Apparently, your controller just wanted to be heard.
Launch Steam in Big Picture Mode
Sometimes switching to Big Picture Mode gets Steam to recognize your gamepad properly.
Open Steam and click Enter Big Picture Mode (top right corner).
Go to Settings > Controller Settings.
Enable Generic Gamepad Configuration Support.
Then launch Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 from Big Picture Mode and see if your controller stops being dramatic.
Final Blurb
If none of this works, don’t worry—it's not you, it's the game. The developers are already aware of the controller issues, so a patch is likely on the way. Until then, these fixes should help you get back to dodging attacks and missing parries in style.
