How to Fix the Black Screen Bug in Revenge of the Savage Planet

You load up the game, hear some strange alien noises, see the subtitles... and that’s it. No visuals. Just a beautiful, immersive black void. If you're stuck staring at nothing while the game pretends everything's fine, here's how to get your screen back.
1. Install the VP9 Codec (Yes, Seriously)
For many players, the black screen is happening because the game's videos were encoded using the VP9 codec, which, of course, is not bundled with some systems by default.
To fix it:
Open the Microsoft Store
Search for "VP9 Video Extensions"
Install it (it’s free)
This alone fixed the issue for a bunch of folks. Especially if you’re on PC Game Pass or Epic, this is the first thing you should try.
2. Turn Off the NVIDIA Overlay
If you’re using an NVIDIA GPU, the GeForce Experience overlay could be messing with video playback.
To disable it:
Open GeForce Experience
Click the gear icon to open Settings
Go to General
Turn off In-Game Overlay
Some users said this instantly fixed their black screen.
3. Other Things to Try (If the Above Didn't Work)
If you’ve done the codec install and turned off the overlay but still can’t see anything:
Update your GPU drivers – sometimes simple, sometimes magic
Restart the game after installing the codec – yes, close it fully first
Try launching in windowed mode using launch options (via Steam or Epic)
Check for background apps like screen recorders or third-party overlays (Rivatuner, MSI Afterburner, etc.)
Final Blurb
If all you’re getting is sound and a black void, it’s probably just a missing codec or an overlay getting in the way. Most players fixed it by installing the VP9 extension from the Microsoft Store, so start there. And if you’re still stuck after that... well, maybe the game just doesn’t want to be seen yet.
