How to Save Sun Jian at the Battle of Xiangyang in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Sun Jian’s death at the Battle of Xiangyang in 191 AD is one of those historical events that just doesn’t sit well with fans—especially when you’re supposed to be the hero in the middle of all this chaos. Thankfully, Dynasty Warriors: Origins gives you the chance to rewrite history and rescue the “Tiger of Jiangdong.” Here’s a simple guide to saving him, complete with a few bumps in the road (and a ghost, because why not?).

Step 1: Ignore the Northeast, Focus on the Southwest

The stage begins on the eastern riverbank. Your job? Don’t get distracted by the shiny enemies to the northeast. Sure, Cai He might look like a good warm-up fight, but this is not the time. Instead, head straight down the southwest path and start clearing out generals. You’re paving the way for Sun Ce’s army, so don’t slow down.

Step 2: Clear the Narrow Path Base

By the time you’ve reached the base at the end of the narrow path, events on the map’s south side will start to escalate. Sun Jian will find himself cornered in the southwest corner of the map. This is your cue to hustle westward and get those gates opened ASAP.

Step 3: Meet the Ghost of Zhang Jiao

Because it wouldn’t be Dynasty Warriors without something completely random, Zhang Jiao’s ghost and his Yellow Turban lackeys will appear to block your way. Yes, a ghost. Because why shouldn’t your heroic rescue mission involve a spectral boss fight?

How to Defeat Zhang Jiao’s Ghost:

  • Clear the Lackeys First: His minions are annoying but squishy. Take them out quickly so you can focus on the main event.

  • Be Patient: Even with great gear, this fight will take some time. Don’t get reckless.

Once Zhang Jiao’s ghost is defeated, you’re free to move on.

Step 4: Beat Huang Gai to Sun Jian

Now comes the critical part. You must reach Sun Jian before Huang Gai does. If Huang Gai beats you there, it’s game over for the rescue mission.

Pro Tip: Ignore distractions like Huang Zu and nearby officers unless they’re actively blocking your path. Every second counts, so don’t let your completionist instincts sabotage you.

Step 5: Enjoy the Alternate Ending

If you successfully reach Sun Jian before Huang Gai, you’ll trigger an alternate ending where Sun Jian survives. Cue the heroic music and some well-deserved fist pumps.

However, note that saving Sun Jian means you won’t have time to take out Liu Biao, the enemy leader stationed in the fortress's northern end. If you’re chasing that Ultimate Warrior challenge, you’ll need to replay the stage in Free Mode.

Final Blurb

Rescuing Sun Jian at the Battle of Xiangyang is no walk in the park. Between the ghost of Zhang Jiao, the frantic race against Huang Gai, and a sea of enemies, you’ll need speed, strategy, and a good bit of patience. But hey, rewriting history was never going to be easy, right?

Good luck, and remember: If ghosts start showing up, just roll with it. It’s Dynasty Warriors—we stopped questioning the logic ages ago.
