Necessary Evil is a main quest that takes place after Back in the Saddle. Henry and Hans Capon are ordered to interrogate a prisoner and track down the bandits responsible for an ambush. Depending on your choices, you will attack either Semine or Nebakov Fortress.

Note: See our guide on who to choose here.

Step 1: Interrogate the Prisoner

  • Talk to Capon and head to the torture chamber.

  • You can threaten, persuade, or torture the prisoner.

  • If successful, you will learn about:

    • The bandit leader

    • Istvan Toth’s involvement

    • Olda Semine’s role in the ambush

  • You can pass skill checks to get more details:

    • "We'll put in a good word for you." (20 Impression)

    • "Istvan and I are old acquaintances." (20 Impression)

    • "Otherwise, it'll end badly for you." (17 Intimidation)

Step 2: Report to Von Bergow (Big Decision!)

After interrogating the prisoner, you report back to Lord Otto von Bergow. Here’s where things get serious.

  • Accuse Semine → Attack Semine’s estate

  • Say the bandits acted alone → Attack Nebakov Fortress

Your choice will change the next part of the quest.

Option A: Attack Semine (If You Accused Him)

  • Von Bergow orders an attack on Semine.

  • Join the soldiers quickly—if you lag behind, everyone at Semine’s estate will die.

  • Ride to Semine with Hans Capon and Burgrave Hashek.

  • At Semine's estate, you must decide:

    • Side with Hashek → Help burn the estate and kill Semine’s men.

    • Defend Semine → Fight against Hashek and his soldiers.

  • If you help Semine, you must lie to von Bergow to keep him safe.

Option B: Attack Nebakov (If You Said Semine Was Innocent)

  • Von Bergow orders an attack on Nebakov Fortress instead.

  • This skips the whole Semine battle and moves the story forward.

  • No major moral dilemmas here—just another battle ahead.

Step 3: Return to Trosky Castle

  • Ride back to von Bergow and report what happened.

  • You can stay silent and let Hans Capon do the talking, or tell the truth.

  • If everything goes smoothly, you’ll be invited to an evening feast.

Warning: This is a key point in the story. If you want to do side quests, finish Demons of Trosky before going to the feast.

Quest Outcomes

Attack Semine & Side with Hashek → Everyone at Semine’s estate dies.
Attack Semine & Side with Semine → Fight Hashek’s men & help Semine escape.
Attack Nebakov → Skip the Semine conflict entirely.

Final Tips

  • Want action? Accuse Semine and pick a side in the battle.

  • Want a cleaner outcome? Keep Semine out of it and attack Nebakov.

  • If you want to help Semine, do not fall behind on the ride—or his entire estate burns.

That’s it! Choose wisely, because this quest affects the story moving forward.
