If you want to enchant weapons or keep your magical gear charged, you’ll need Soul Gems. In Oblivion Remastered, these little stones are essential for anyone dabbling in magic—or just wanting their sword to set things on fire.
How to Get Soul Gems
There are a few easy ways to stock up:
Loot Enemies
Bandits, necromancers, and mages sometimes carry Soul Gems. Either pickpocket them or grab the gems after combat.
Open Chests and Containers
Check every chest, crate, and sack you come across. Dungeons, caves, and forts often hide Soul Gems inside random containers.
Buy from Merchants
General Goods vendors and Mages Guild traders usually sell Soul Gems. Expect limited stock that only refreshes every 7 in-game days—and be ready to pay up.
Keep in mind, loot is level-based. At lower levels, you’ll mostly find Petty and Lesser Soul Gems. Grand and Black Soul Gems start appearing more often as you level up.
Types of Soul Gems
Here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll find:
Petty, Lesser, Common, Greater, Grand Soul Gems – Used for different creature souls.
Black Soul Gems – Needed for capturing human souls.
Azura’s Star – A reusable Grand Soul Gem (if you’ve completed Azura’s quest).

How to Fill Soul Gems
You’ll need the Soul Trap spell or a weapon enchanted with Soul Trap. Cast it on an enemy just before delivering the final blow. If you have an empty Soul Gem of the right size, their soul gets trapped.
Watch out—if you only have a Grand Soul Gem and capture a weak creature, it’ll waste the gem by filling it with a tiny soul. Always carry a variety of empty gems to avoid this.
How to Use Soul Gems
Enchant Items: Use an Altar of Enchanting in the Mages Guild (once you're an Apprentice).
Recharge Gear: Select a filled Soul Gem from your inventory, choose your enchanted weapon, and hit Recharge.
Final Blurb
Soul Gems turn basic weapons into legendary tools and keep your magical gear running strong. Whether you're looting dungeons or sweet-talking a merchant, always keep a few empty gems—and don’t forget to trap something bigger than a rat if you want real power.
