How to Reverse Your Ship
You back up by opening the Sailing interface and tapping the down arrow two times. This turns on reverse mode and makes your ship drift backward. It works on every boat as long as you are at the helm and in control mode.

How the Controls Work in Sailing
You board your ship and walk to the helm. Click the helm to take control. The game lets you move your boat the same way you move your character. You point your mouse where you want to go and click. Your ship follows that direction as long as nothing blocks your path.
You also get a control panel for speed. The panel lets you speed up, slow down, stop your ship, and switch into reverse. Pressing the down arrow twice flips your ship into backward motion. It is not fast but it gives you room to rotate or fix your angle near tight spots.
