Why Boats Get Stuck
Boat movement can freeze when you dock, leave the helm at a strange angle, hit a visual bug, or load into the sea with certain plugins active. When this happens your helm direction will not respond and reverse mode will not push you free. The fix changes depending on whether you are at a dock or out in open water.
Stuck At A Dock
If you are stuck at a dock your cargo stays safe. Right click the gangplank, leave your ship, and relog. When you log back in the boat resets its position and the helm responds normally again. This is the safest method since your materials and loot remain in the cargo hold.
Stuck Out At Sea
When your ship locks in open water you need to use the tiller. Right click the tiller and select escape. This forces your boat to reset when you relog. You will lose the cargo in your hold but the boat will return to a working state once you load back in. Use this only when you cannot reach a dock.
Plugin Issues
If your boat becomes invisible or your client crashes when touching the helm you may need to disable visual plugins. Legacy GPU and 117HD have caused movement glitches on some setups. Turn them off, restart the client, and try sailing again. This fixes most invisibility and random steering problems.
When The Helm Ignores Commands
If your helm sets a direction but the ship never moves, check your speed arrows. Make sure your speed is not set to zero and that you are not against shallow terrain or shoreline geometry. If you left your boat in Pandemonium and teleported away, the charter ships may not offer a route back.
