One of the most efficient power sources for your RimWorld Odyssey gravship is the Life Support Unit, a discovery widely discussed and verified by the RimWorld community, notably by Reddit user u/SmurfInHell on r/RimWorld. These wall-mounted units produce 3200W of free, passive power, and they keep working even after being moved via gravship landing.

What Is the Life Support Unit?

The Life Support Unit is a small wall feature that looks like a black box with a red light on top. It spawns on certain wall tiles inside garrisons or derelict orbital stations. Despite being tied to a "station," the unit still generates full power even after you relocate it with your gravship.

Each unit provides a flat 3200W and requires no fuel, no solar, and no upkeep. That’s nearly as much as a geothermal generator (3600W) in just one tile of space.

How to Capture and Use Them

  1. Find a Garrison or Station
Use the bottom-right map search to look for garrisons or orbital bases. These often spawn with Life Support Units inside.

  2. Land Your Gravship Nearby
Build your ship’s substructure under the tile that holds the Life Support Unit. Do not remove the wall it's attached to. Just replace the floor below it.

  3. Unroof the Area
You must remove the roof over the unit so your ship can take off with it included.

  4. Launch with the Unit Attached
Once the floor is part of your gravship, you can launch. The wall and Life Support Unit will stay intact, giving you a free, compact power source.

  5. Stack More Units
Repeat the process at other garrisons or stations. You can cluster multiple units by expanding your ship design around their locations, then launching again.

Relocating Units Inside the Ship

The units can’t be moved once onboard unless you reposition your ship.

To adjust the placement:

  • Land the ship on an open map with a grav anchor

  • Leave a hole in the substructure where you want the unit to go

  • Destroy the old walls around the original unit location

  • Fly the ship back and land it centered on the new spot

It’s tedious, but it works. You can also use conduits to route the power wherever needed if placement isn't perfect.

Other Notes

  • These units may be patched in future updates

  • They only have 35 HP, so protect them with walls or interior placement

  • Power output can vary slightly (some report 5800W units)

  • You cannot move them using mods like Minify Everything without breaking them

  • Terraformers exist, but they are bulkier (4x4) and only give 4000W

Final Blurb

If you’re building a gravship in RimWorld Odyssey and still using chemfuel generators, you’re behind. Life Support Units give unmatched power in a 1-tile package.

Abuse it while you can. It’s small, free, and barely legal.

FAQ

Q: Where do I find Life Support Units?

Inside garrisons and orbital stations on the world map.

Q: How much power do they give?

Each one gives 3200W passively, with no fuel or connection needed.

Q: Do they still work after leaving the map?

Yes, they continue generating power after being attached to your gravship.

Q: Can I move them once on the ship?

Only by repositioning your ship or redesigning around their location.

Q: Do I need to deconstruct the wall to take them?

No, keep the wall intact. Replace only the floor with substructure.

Q: Can I use this with the grav anchor?

Yes, use the anchor to land at the right location and realign as needed.

Q: Is this a bug or intended?

It’s unclear. Devs may patch it, but it currently works in 1.6 with Odyssey enabled.
