Fishing in RimWorld is part of the game now after the Odyssey DLC. You need to research it first, then set up a fishing zone on any body of water. Colonists can fish for food, and some animals will do it on their own.
Here’s how to do it.
Unlocking Fishing in RimWorld
Research first
You can’t fish right away. You need to research the Fishing tech in the research tree.
Once unlocked, you’ll be able to place fishing zones.
Setting Up a Fishing Zone
Choose a water tile
Pick any pond, river, or coastal tile. Use the zone tool to mark it as a fishing zone.
Colonists with the Hunting skill will begin fishing there when assigned.
Hunting skill required
Fishing uses the Hunting skill, not Plants or Animals. Colonists with high Shooting will often fish better.
You can manage who fishes by adjusting their work priorities or disabling the zone.
Managing the Fish Supply
Avoid overfishing
If you fish the same area too much, it can run out. You’ll see fewer fish appear in the water.
Each zone has options to leave a portion of the fish untouched. This lets the population grow back over time.
Watch for gill rot
Gill rot is a water disease that kills off fish over time. It doesn’t harm humans, but it will wipe out fishing zones if ignored.
Flooding can spread fish
If your colony gets flooded, fish can move between bodies of water and show up in new zones.
This is a way to repopulate ponds naturally.
Types of Fish and Uses
You’ll find fish like bass, tuna, salmon, and others depending on the biome. These are hauled and stored like normal food and can be cooked or preserved.
Fishing is a good backup if you’re traveling often or stuck in poor farming conditions.
Animals That Fish
Some animals will fish on their own if near a zone. This includes:
Bears
Otters
Penguins
These animals don’t need orders and will bring fish back when tamed.
