RuneScape: Dragonwilds Lore Explained

If you’ve been wondering why dragons keep melting your camp every ten minutes, welcome to Ashenfall — the lost continent where RuneScape: Dragonwilds takes place. It’s part of Gielinor, but it’s been forgotten for ages, and let’s just say nature didn’t take that well.

What Is Ashenfall?
Ashenfall is an ancient region of Gielinor that’s only now being uncovered (or… rediscovered *inserts dramatic music). From what we’ve seen, it was once a thriving land — possibly even a hub of civilization — but it’s now totally overrun. Dragons rule the skies, goblins warp through walls, and the land itself is hostile. Something big went wrong here, and you're arriving long after the fall.
There are ruins scattered everywhere, suggesting a large collapse. Whether that was caused by dragons or something else, we don’t know yet, but it seems likely the dragons took over after some major magical disaster.
Your goal isn’t just to survive Ashenfall, but to rebuild it. You’re encouraged to reclaim the land, defend your base, and eventually face the worst monsters it has to offer.
Imaru and the Dragon Queen
According to the in-game roadmap, we’ll eventually enter a region called Fellhollow, ruled by a powerful dragon named Imaru… Also called the Soul-Eater. That title alone suggests she isn’t just strong, but possibly tied to some kind of necromantic or spiritual magic. It’s possible Imaru was once a guardian or protector of Ashenfall who turned monstrous, though that’s just speculation.
The true endgame boss, at least right now, seems like it will be the Dragon Queen. She’s only mentioned in passing, but the wording around her suggests she’s behind the continent’s current state. Whether she’s responsible for its downfall or just ruling over the ashes remains to be seen. Either way, you’re working toward taking her down.
Hints of Ancient Magic
Magic already shows up in minor ways — you can summon fire spirits, enchant weapons with fire or air, and cast spells like Bones to Peaches (an RS classic). A full magic skill tree is marked as "coming soon," along with ranged and farming.
But these early spells hint that Ashenfall is still soaked in old magic. Players might be reawakening powers that were buried with the continent itself. It wouldn’t be surprising if the story eventually reveals that restoring balance to the land means mastering the same magical forces that caused its ruin.
Possible Lore Connections
Runestones and ruins: These suggest a lost magical society, possibly wiped out during a war with dragons or through misuse of powerful spells.
Warping goblins and toxic sludge: These enemies feel unnatural. The goblins teleport, and the dragon attacks leave behind lingering environmental effects. That points to lingering corruption — maybe magical, maybe tied to the Queen.
Skill trees and quests: With quests and classic RuneScape gear confirmed to return, we’ll likely learn more about who lived here before and what they left behind.
Final Blurb
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is still early, but its lore already paints a clear picture: Ashenfall was once something great. Now it’s a battlefield between monsters, magic, and whoever’s brave (or foolish) enough to rebuild here. You’re not just exploring ruins but you’re now truly a part of the next chapter of RuneScape (one of our favorite, if not all-time favorite franchises and universes). The dragons came to conquer, but you came to fix what they broke.
Just try not to die too many times while figuring it all out.
