GTA 6 Is Bringing Podcasts to Leonida Alongside Its Biggest Radio Lineup Yet

Grand Theft Auto has spent decades turning its radio stations into something far more important than background music, and GTA 6 appears ready to expand that idea well beyond the car stereo.

Rockstar has revealed the first six radio stations coming to Grand Theft Auto 6, spanning everything from modern Latin music and Southern hip-hop to metal, country and pop. But the larger change may be what happens when players get out of the car: GTA 6 will also introduce on-demand podcasts for the first time in the series, while allowing both radio and podcasts to continue playing as Jason and Lucia explore Leonida on foot.

The new system effectively turns music and talk programming into something players can carry around the world rather than something tied almost exclusively to driving. Headphones and earbuds connected to the characters' smartphones will allow the audio to continue away from vehicles, giving Rockstar considerably more room to use its fictional media while players are simply moving through the world.

Rockstar Has Revealed the First Six GTA 6 Radio Stations

Rockstar is describing GTA 6 as having the biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio and podcasts the series has offered, although the company has not yet revealed the complete lineup. For now, six stations are available to preview through the official GTA 6 website.

Cocoteo FM focuses on modern Latin music, with programming that stretches across styles including bachata, merengue, dembow and reggaeton. Back Country Radio heads in a completely different direction with what Rockstar describes as renegade country, while AfroBank FM pulls from amapiano, African classics and 3-step.

The Chamber 106.6 fills GTA 6's heavier slot with metal, while Dirty South Classics concentrates on regional rap and hip-hop. Flash FM is also returning as a recognizable piece of Vice City's radio history, this time built around pop music with Robyn and Alex hosting the station.

The lineup is already considerably broader than simply dividing the soundtrack into broad genre playlists. Rockstar is once again building individual stations around hosts, personalities and their own identities, continuing the format that has allowed Grand Theft Auto's radio to function as part soundtrack and part commentary on the world around it.

Some of the Hosts Are Nearly as Big as the Music

Rockstar has also recruited a notable group of artists to voice the personalities behind several of those stations.

Bad Bunny and RaiNao are behind Cocoteo FM's El Martillo and La Gata, while Burna Boy and Palms Trax appear through AfroBank FM. The Chamber features Slayer members Kerry King and Tom Araya, and Dirty South Classics brings together Trick Daddy and Trina. Robyn appears on Flash FM alongside Alex Consani, while Back Country Radio includes Morgan Wallen, Lana Del Rey and Jeremy Dufrene among its voices.

That approach gives Rockstar another way to blur the boundary between real music culture and the fictional version of America it has constructed around Leonida. GTA radio has traditionally mixed licensed songs with absurd advertisements, talk segments and characters created specifically for the game, and the newly revealed stations suggest that formula is being expanded rather than replaced.

The six stations can already be previewed through Rockstar's website, with the samples combining music and snippets of the personalities players will hear when the full game launches.

Podcasts Give Rockstar a New Way to Fill the World

The addition of podcasts is more interesting than simply adding another category to GTA 6's audio menu because it gives Rockstar a format that fits particularly well with the world the studio is trying to parody.

Talk radio has been part of Grand Theft Auto for years, often providing some of the series' most direct satire through callers, hosts, conspiracy theories and exaggerated versions of real-world arguments. On-demand podcasts give Rockstar a modern extension of the same idea without requiring players to wait for a particular segment to appear on a radio station.

Rockstar has not yet detailed the individual podcast shows or explained exactly how extensive the system will be. It has confirmed, however, that GTA 6 will contain a series of on-demand podcasts rather than a single isolated program. Players will be able to access them alongside radio programming both in vehicles and while walking around Leonida.

That could make fictional media much more persistent in GTA 6 than it was in previous games. A talk segment no longer has to compete with driving, missions or the player's decision to leave a vehicle before it finishes. If players want to keep listening, they can simply take it with them.

GTA 6 Radio Will No Longer Stop When You Leave the Car

The ability to keep listening on foot may ultimately have a larger effect on how players experience the soundtrack than the number of stations Rockstar eventually includes.

Radio has traditionally been associated with vehicles throughout Grand Theft Auto, creating some of the series' most memorable moments while driving through Liberty City, San Andreas or Vice City. Once the player stepped outside, however, that soundtrack largely disappeared with the vehicle.

GTA 6's headphones and earbuds change that relationship. Players will be able to continue listening while walking through Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, giving music and podcasts a place during exploration that previous games generally reserved for ambient sound and the game's score.

It also makes the in-game smartphone more important as a piece of the wider experience. Rockstar has increasingly used phones as interfaces for characters, websites and services throughout Grand Theft Auto, and connecting personal audio to that same device makes the system feel less like a traditional video game radio menu and more like something Jason and Lucia are actually carrying around.

GTA 6's Music Goes Beyond the Radio

The radio reveal arrives alongside Rockstar's separate plans for Grand Theft Auto 6's official soundtrack.

Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album contains 34 original tracks and is scheduled to arrive alongside the game on November 19. Rockstar has already released six singles from the project, including music from Yung Lean with Future and Metro Boomin, Travis Scott, Rauw Alejandro, Morgan Wallen and Keith Richards.

The distinction is important because the album is not simply a list of licensed songs collected from the game's radio stations. Rockstar is commissioning original music specifically around GTA 6 while simultaneously assembling the larger licensed radio ecosystem that players will hear throughout Leonida.

There is still considerably more to learn. Rockstar has only shown six of GTA 6's stations rather than identifying the complete radio lineup, individual podcast programs have not been detailed and the company says additional information about the game's music is still to come.

GTA 6 Is Treating Its Media Like Part of Leonida Itself

Grand Theft Auto's radio has always helped establish where its games take place. The music provides the obvious regional identity, but the hosts, commercials and conversations surrounding it are often just as important in establishing what kind of place Rockstar wants its fictional cities to be.

GTA 6 appears to be pushing that concept further by making its media less dependent on where the player happens to be standing. Cars will still have their familiar stations, but music can follow players onto the street and podcasts provide another format through which Rockstar can build characters, jokes and stories that exist alongside the main narrative.

With six stations revealed and more still unannounced, Rockstar has not yet shown the full extent of GTA 6's radio lineup. What it has shown suggests the biggest change is not simply that there will be more to listen to.

For the first time, Grand Theft Auto's radio culture is being designed to follow players almost everywhere they go.
