99 Nights in the Forest Bat Monster Guide

The Bat catches a lot of players off guard because it does not play by the same rules as most monsters. I made this guide to explain exactly how the Bat works, what triggers it, and how to get through its cave without taking unnecessary damage.
What The Bat Is In 99 Nights In The Forest
The Bat is a hostile monster entity in 99 Nights in the Forest.
It is one of the secondary antagonists, along with The Owl and The Ram. The Bat is unkillable and cannot be stunned.
You are not meant to fight it. You are meant to avoid it.
Where The Bat Appears
The Bat only appears underground.
It spawns inside caves, most commonly the Bat Cave. It can never leave the cave and will never reach your campfire.
Because of this, the Bat is a controlled encounter instead of a roaming threat.
What Triggers The Bat Encounter
The encounter starts the moment you enter a Bat Cave.
When you step inside, the Bat lets out a loud screech and flies away. That sound is your warning that the encounter has begun.
From that point on, the Bat patrols the cave on a fixed flight path.
How The Bat Attacks
The Bat does not chase you.
Instead, it flies between set points in the cave and pauses to attack. When it is about to attack, an exclamation mark appears above it.
Shortly after, it releases a screech attack.
The attack is shown as a fast expanding red sphere. If it hits you, it deals damage and blurs your vision.
How To Avoid Bat Damage
Avoiding the Bat is all about timing and cover.
When you see the exclamation mark, stop moving and get behind cover. Stalagmites, rocks, and cave objects all work.
If you break line of sight before the screech goes off, you take no damage.
Once the attack finishes, the Bat flies to the next point on its path.
Other Threats Inside The Cave
The Bat is not the only danger in the cave.
While avoiding its attacks, you also deal with Shadow Cultists and Brute Cultists. These enemies can distract you at bad times.
You also need to activate large crystal clusters using your flashlight to progress. This forces you to manage positioning carefully.
I usually clear cultists first, then focus on movement and cover.
Why Flashlights Do Not Work On The Bat
The Bat is blind.
Because of this, the flashlight does nothing to it. You cannot stun it, slow it, or interrupt its attacks.
Hiding is the only counter. Once I accepted that, the encounter became much easier.
Bat Lore And Special Behavior
During The Deer Is Hurt update, the Bat only appeared as glowing eyes watching from its cave.
After helping The Deer recover, a cutscene showed The Deer attacking the Bat. After that, the Bat Cave became accessible.
The Bat is stronger than The Deer in its normal state, but weaker than a Hungry Deer based on cutscenes.
Important Bat Facts To Know
These details help set expectations.
The Bat is unkillable
It only attacks inside caves
It never chases the player
It cannot be stunned
It uses ranged area damage
It can appear even if 2 monsters are already active
Because it stays confined underground, it is the only monster that can never threaten your base.
Final Blurb
The Bat is not about combat. It is about awareness and patience. Once you learn the attack warning and trust cover, the encounter becomes consistent. I treat it like a timing puzzle instead of a fight, and that mindset makes all the difference.
