14% of North Americans Still Play Consoles from the 90s (and Earlier!)

Retro gaming is absolutely thriving. While modern consoles offer digital libraries full of classics, and devices like the Evercade keep old-school gaming fresh, plenty of people still fire up the real deal.

A new Consumer Reports survey found that 14% of North Americans still play on consoles released before 2000. That means millions are still enjoying the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Genesis, N64, Dreamcast, PS1, and other legendary systems—despite their “defunct” status.

And if that wasn’t enough nostalgia, the survey also found:

  • 15% of Americans listened to a cassette tape last year (because nothing beats rewinding with a pencil).

  • 15% watched a movie on VHS (probably with tracking issues).

  • 3% actually used a LaserDisc (they’re out there, somewhere).

  • 11% of American households still use a fax machine (for reasons unknown).

So next time someone tells you to "move on" from your old console, just remember—you’re not alone.
