Aloft: Animals Guide and How to Get Them

Animals in Aloft are more than just cute sky-dwellers—they're walking resource factories. Sheep give you wool, chickens provide eggs and feathers, and they all help restore island ecosystems. Here’s how to collect them without pulling your hair out.

Step 1: Find the Animals

Animals are spread across different biomes. Here’s where to start:

  • Emerald Isles (Starting Zone): Look for sheep and alpacas just chilling on islands.

  • Fallen Heights (Second Zone): Expect to find chickens—or pheasants, or some bird-like creature the developers haven’t quite named yet.

Step 2: Make Friends (AKA Feed Them)

Animals won’t just hop on your ship because you’re nice. They want food first:

  • Sheep and Alpacas: Feed them Hay, crafted at a workbench with three small plants. Use a scythe to harvest bushes for plants.

  • Chickens (or Birds): Grind any crop seeds at a Millstone to make Pellets, their snack of choice.

Step 3: Transport Them

Once fed, the animals are suddenly okay with being kidnapped. Pick them up and send them back to your home island. Don’t overthink how this works—it’s sky magic.

Step 4: Care for Your New Pets

Your animals aren’t freeloaders. You’ll need to keep them happy:

  • Feed Them Regularly: Until you unlock the Trough (found in Fallen Heights), you’ll have to hand-feed them. The trough lets them self-serve, saving you time and sanity.

  • Keep Them Fed: Hungry animals don’t produce resources. Check their hunger individually until you have better systems in place.

Step 5: Collect Resources

  • Wool: Harvested from sheep and alpacas using shears. Wool is crucial for crafting early-game items.

  • Eggs and Feathers: Provided by chickens (assuming they’re well-fed and not holding grudges).

Pro Tip

If you don’t feel like micromanaging their meals, focus on unlocking the trough as soon as possible. It’s a game-changer—literally.

With this guide, you’re ready to become a sky shepherd. Now go forth and build your floating farm empire, one alpaca at a time.
