All Apex Legends Characters In Order Of Release

Apex Legends currently has 28 playable characters, called Legends. The newest Legend is Axle, who joined the roster in Season 29: Overclocked.

The release order matters because Apex has changed a lot since launch. The original roster focused on simpler team roles like scouting, mobility, defense, and revives. Later seasons added more specialized kits, stronger repositioning tools, deeper class identity, and more complex ability combos.

Release Order Legend Season Added Current Class
1 Bangalore Launch Assault
2 Bloodhound Launch Recon
3 Caustic Launch Controller
4 Gibraltar Launch Support
5 Lifeline Launch Support
6 Mirage Launch Support
7 Pathfinder Launch Skirmisher
8 Wraith Launch Skirmisher
9 Octane Season 1 Skirmisher
10 Wattson Season 2 Controller
11 Crypto Season 3 Recon
12 Revenant Season 4 Skirmisher
13 Loba Season 5 Support
14 Rampart Season 6 Controller
15 Horizon Season 7 Skirmisher
16 Fuse Season 8 Assault
17 Valkyrie Season 9 Skirmisher
18 Seer Season 10 Recon
19 Ash Season 11 Assault
20 Mad Maggie Season 12 Assault
21 Newcastle Season 13 Support
22 Vantage Season 14 Recon
23 Catalyst Season 15 Controller
24 Ballistic Season 17 Assault
25 Conduit Season 19 Support
26 Alter Season 21 Skirmisher
27 Sparrow Season 25 Recon
28 Axle Season 29 Skirmisher

The biggest gap in the roster timeline is between Alter and Sparrow, then another gap before Axle. That makes the newer Legends stand out more because Respawn is no longer adding a new character every season. When a new Legend does arrive, it usually comes with broader gameplay changes instead of being a small roster update.

Original Apex Legends Characters

The original Apex Legends launch roster had 8 Legends: Bangalore, Bloodhound, Caustic, Gibraltar, Lifeline, Mirage, Pathfinder, and Wraith.

Octane is often grouped with the early roster because he arrived so soon after launch, but he was not one of the original launch characters. He was added in Season 1 as the game’s first post launch Legend.

Newest Apex Legends Character

The newest Apex Legends character is Axle, added in Season 29: Overclocked.

Axle pushed the roster to 28 playable Legends. Before Axle, the newest Legend was Sparrow, who joined in Season 25: Prodigy as a Recon Legend. Sparrow brought tracking tools and archer themed utility, while Axle is built around speed, movement, and high tempo play.

How Many Characters Are In Apex Legends

Apex Legends has 28 playable characters as of Season 29: Overclocked.

That number includes the 8 launch Legends and 20 post launch Legends added across later seasons. The roster has grown more slowly in recent years, with several seasons focusing on reworks, class updates, modes, balance changes, and broader gameplay systems instead of adding a new Legend every season.
