Getting into the church during The Beast Within can be confusing because the front doors are locked. The quest forces you through the basement, past a room full of Sleepers, before chasing the Beast up the tower. Knowing the exact route keeps you from wasting time or getting trapped.
Reach the Church
After checking the explosion site, the quest points you toward Old Town’s church. Once there, you’ll get a message that the Beast is coming from the basement. All main doors are sealed, so ignore them and head down the stairs.
Investigate the Basement Entrance
Look for the smashed iron gate at the bottom of the stairs. Move to the opening just to the right of the gate and crouch through it. The entire basement is filled with Sleepers, so use Survivor Sense to track them and stay out of sight.
Stick to the far right corner, then climb onto the small platform. Push the wooden plank aside to reach the church’s main interior. This is where you’ll first see the Beast before it escapes toward the top of the building.
Pursue the Beast
The noise wakes up the basement Sleepers. You can fight or start climbing. Staying above ground level reduces the number of infected attacking at once, and you can kick them off platforms for extra safety.
Climb the Tower
Follow the outside ledge, hopping between columns until you reach a wooden platform. Kick down the folding ladder so you don’t have to restart from the bottom if you fall.
Inside, use chandeliers to cross the hall. Jump from the first to the second, then grab the rope. Swing straight to the stone ledge above the altar without hesitation or you’ll lose momentum.
From there, climb up to a wooden beam on the opposite side. Clear out the infected waiting near the landing spot, then continue climbing. At the end of the beam, jump across the hall to the open window. This puts you on the roof, where you can use Survivor Sense to follow the Beast’s trail.
