Half Sword How to Rank Up

Ranking up in Half Sword is done by earning points and defeating rank bosses in Gauntlet mode. You start at the lowest rank and must win fights, unlock the Grete Champion, and defeat that boss to move up. This guide focuses only on how ranking works and how to move through ranks as efficiently as possible.

How Ranking Works In Half Sword

Ranking is tied mainly to Gauntlet mode. You always begin as a Beggar and work upward through each rank one at a time.

Each rank has its own weapon and armor loadouts. To advance, you must earn enough points to unlock the Grete Champion for that rank and then defeat it.

How To Earn Points Faster

Points are earned by winning fights in Gauntlet mode. The key detail is that loadout choice affects how many points you gain.

Using lower tier loadouts gives bonus points. This means weaker gear can actually speed up rank progression if you can still win consistently.

  • Win fights in Gauntlet mode to earn points

  • Choose lower tier loadouts for bonus points

  • Avoid unnecessary losses to protect progress

Unlocking And Beating The Grete Champion

Each rank has a Grete Champion boss. You cannot rank up until this boss is defeated.

The number of points required to unlock the Grete Champion increases by 1 each time you reach a new rank. After unlocking it, defeating the boss immediately promotes you to the next rank.

Loadout Randomization Rules

At the start of each rank, you can randomize your loadout for free. Once you enter the Gauntlet, rerolling a loadout costs 1 point.

Because points are also needed to unlock the Grete Champion, randomizing too often can slow progress. Only reroll when a loadout is truly unusable for your playstyle.

What Happens When You Die

Death has different consequences depending on your rank.

If you die in Gauntlet mode as Peasant or higher, you are sent to the Abyss. In the Abyss, you can keep your current tier by defeating the boss of the previous rank.

Failing in the Abyss can push you backward, so playing safely before boss fights matters.

Free Mode And Ranking

Free mode does not affect rank progression. It allows you to select almost any rank from the start, but enemies are weaker and no points or promotions are earned.

The Baron cannot be selected in Free mode until The Ultimate Challenge is completed.
