How to Farm in Aloft: A Simple Guide
Farming in Aloft might sound straightforward, but there are a few steps that can trip you up. Don’t worry—we’ve broken a guide down into bite-sized chunks. Let’s dig in (pun absolutely intended).
Step 1: Get Your Hands on Farming Plots
To start farming, you’ll need Rustic Farming Plots. You can:
Discover them by interacting with Knowledge Stones.
Scan them if you spot one out in the wild.
You’ll also unlock Plant Pots, which are great for small-scale farming. Fancy Plank Farming Plots are a step up, but you’ll need a sawmill to craft planks. If you don’t have one yet, better get chopping.
Step 2: Build a Compost Bin
No compost, no crops—so you’ll need to:
Build a Compost Bin.
Collect manure from your animals (yes, poop is currency in farming).
Toss manure into the bin to make compost.
Once you have compost, you’re good to go. Bonus: You can automatically attach multiple farming plots together to make one giant plot. It’s like farming LEGO blocks, but with dirt.
Step 3: Craft a Stone Hoe (Yeah, They Went There)
To till your soil, you’ll need a Stone Hoe. Here’s what you need to make it:
2 Planks (grab a sawmill if you don’t have one).
1 Rope.
1 Sharp Stone.
Craft it, equip it, and start "tilling" (or “hoeing,” because apparently the devs tried to dodge jokes but didn’t quite succeed).
Step 4: Plant Your Seeds
Now that your soil is tilled, it’s time to plant. Keep these tips in mind:
Seeds must be in your inventory—not stored in a granary.
Select the seeds you want to plant (corn, pumpkins, etc.), and place them in the plots.
Organize your rows if you want your farm to look cute and Instagram-worthy.
Step 5: Water Your Crops
Crops won’t grow without water. Here’s the deal:
Grab some water—clean or dirty, it doesn’t matter (plants aren’t picky).
Equip your watering tool and left-click to hydrate your crops.
Pro Tip: Make sure your island has a water source before building your farm, or you’ll be hauling water forever. Trust me, future you will thank you.
Step 6: Wait and Harvest
Your crops will grow over time, but here’s the critical rule:
Don’t swing your scythe or other harvesting tools around willy-nilly. If you accidentally cut your crops before they’re ready, you’ll lose them—and the seeds.
Once they’re mature, harvest carefully and enjoy the fruits (or veggies) of your labor.
Quick Recap for Farming Success

That’s all there is to farming in Aloft! Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll be swimming in corn, pumpkins, and whatever else you decide to grow. Just remember: Don’t hoe your crops to death, and you’ll be fine. Happy farming!
