You’ll see plenty of fish swimming around early on in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, but unless you enjoy staring at them longingly, you’ll need to unlock the ability to fish first.
Here’s exactly how to start fishing, how the fishing minigame works, and what you can do with your fresh, flopping rewards.
How to Unlock Fishing
Choose the Angler Life
Once the game sends you to meet King Ranoah, you’ll be told to visit the Guild Office. Look for the red exclamation point on your map and talk to Auntie Anne at the counter.
Pick the Angler Life from the list of jobs. This will unlock your rod and give you a fishing quest to start reeling things in.
Don’t worry... you can switch Lives later, but you’ll need to hit Fledgling rank in your current job before you’re allowed to change.
Start the First Fishing Quest
After choosing Angler, you’ll get a quest called “The Fish, Cat and Angler.” Head to the docks east of the Guild and find Gramps.
He’ll introduce you to Sardino, who immediately asks you to catch three Sardines. Luckily, they’re swimming right next to the dock, so no need to wander far.
How Fishing Works
Step-by-Step Fishing Controls
Walk near a fish at the docks and press A (Xbox) or F (PC) to cast your rod.
Press the same button again when the fish bites to hook it.
Keep pressing to reel it in and “deal damage” to it.
Use Power Reel for extra damage, but it drains your SP bar quickly.
If the line gets too tense, ease up or stop reeling to avoid snapping it.
It’s not complicated, but you do need to watch your tension and stamina. If you mash without paying attention, you’ll lose the fish and your pride.
What to Do With Fish
Once you’ve caught the sardines, go back to Sardino. He’ll tell you that fish can be sold at the Capital for Dosh. You’ll earn 200 for this first batch of sardines.
Afterward, a girl will ask for a special fish. Follow the quest to find a cat who gives a clue... and then head to the nearby dock again to catch it.
Finally, report to Gramps to rank up to Fledgling, which lets you fish permanently; even if you switch to a different Life.
Final Blurb & FAQ
Fishing in Fantasy Life i is easy to learn, but you’ll still need to stay alert during the fights. The Angler Life starts slow, but it unlocks tons of fish to catch and sell, plus a calm way to earn some Dosh while enjoying the view.
Just don’t burn through all your SP by power-reeling like a maniac.
