To set up a camp or a bonfire with a controller, hold L1, then press Up on the D-pad. That’s really all there is to it. However…

If nothing happens, you’re either in the wrong spot or the game hasn’t let you use bonfires yet. It doesn’t actually unlock until you’ve met the man by the boat on the beach.

Until then, the bonfire icon will show in your radial menu but it’ll stay greyed out like it’s just there to mock you.

You Can’t Use It Until After the Boat Scene

Once you escape the prison and reach the beach, you’ll see a guy standing next to a boat.

Walk up to him.

After that short interaction finishes, the bonfire system will finally start working.

If you try to use it too early, it won’t respond at all, even if the game is already teasing it.

How to Place It with a Controller

Bonfire controls

  • Hold L1

  • Press D-pad Up

  • Move to the bonfire icon on the left wheel

If you’re playing with mouse and keyboard instead, press Q and look for the same icon.

Still greyed out? You’re either indoors, too early in the story, or standing in a weird spot.

What Bonfires Are Used For

Bonfires are your home base in the wild.

They let you:

  • Sleep

  • Level up

  • Fast travel

  • Identify mystery gear

  • Craft or cook (if you’ve unlocked the right perks)

  • Recharge your Soul Fragment powers

Most of that stuff costs Ethereal Cobwebs, so you’ll want to collect a good pile of them before relying too much on your bonfire.

Fueling the Fire

To use full bonfire features, you’ll need cobwebs.

You can get them by:

  • Killing wyrd enemies at night

  • Looting wyrd-infested corpses

  • Visiting late-night zones like the Ruined Marketplace or Horns of the South

No cobwebs means no crafting, no fast travel, and no identifying items. You’ll still be able to sleep though... at least there’s that.

What to Do if You Get Stuck

Some players run into a level-up bug where they’re stuck after assigning points.

To fix that, you need to sleep at least one hour at the bonfire.

If you just level up and walk away, the game won’t continue. Yes, it’s weird, but sleeping is what actually locks in the progress.

Final Blurb & FAQ

Bonfires are way more than a save point in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. Once the story lets you actually use them, they’re how you level up, fast travel, cook food, and make sure you don’t die holding a bag of mystery loot.

Just don’t forget to bring cobwebs or you’ll be staring at a pretty fire with no perks.

FAQ

Q: Why can’t I place a bonfire right after escaping the prison?

You need to reach the beach and talk to the guy by the boat. The game doesn’t unlock the feature until then.

Q: How do I set a bonfire using a controller?

Hold L1 and press Up on the D-pad. Then use the radial menu to select the bonfire icon.

Q: Why is my bonfire icon greyed out?

It means the bonfire system hasn’t unlocked yet or you’re indoors. It only works outside after the beach cutscene.

Q: What are cobwebs used for?

They fuel your bonfire so you can fast travel, identify gear, and recharge powers.

Q: Why am I stuck after leveling up?

You need to sleep for at least one hour after leveling or the game won’t continue.
