Loftia Fishing Guide

Fishing in Loftia is more than a relaxing activity beside the water. There are 28 documented aquatic species to discover, different fishing areas to explore, and an entire skill tree dedicated to improving your catches. Whether you're struggling with the fishing minigame, looking for a particular fish, or trying to level up faster, understanding where and how to fish can make a big difference.

How to Unlock Fishing in Loftia

To unlock fishing in Loftia, progress through the main story until you reach the Hanging Gardens and begin the Fish Are Friends quest associated with Kassim. This introduces the Collector Rod, which you'll use to catch fish at ripples in the water. Completing Fish Are Friends also satisfies the prerequisite for Fishing proficiency progression.

Here's how to get started:

  1. Progress through the main quests until you can access the Hanging Gardens.
  2. Find Kassim and follow the Fish Are Friends quest.
  3. Obtain the Collector Rod through the quest's crafting objectives.
  4. Equip your Collector Rod and locate a fishing spot.
  5. Cast into the ripples and complete the fishing minigame.
  6. Finish the quest to continue developing your Fishing skill.

Fishing is particularly useful in the Hanging Gardens because the region contains several different aquatic habitats. Many of the species you catch can also be contributed to research projects or exchanged through Contribution Bins.

How to Get the Collector Rod

The Collector Rod is the main tool used for fishing. It allows you to collect aquatic resources from active fishing spots rather than simply interacting with ordinary water.

Earlier crafting records list 5 Rattan, 5 Jute, and 1 Plastic Sheet as its recipe at the Project Station. A Plastic Sheet can be refined from 5 Plastic Discards. Check your current crafting recipe before gathering these quantities, since this particular material list predates the latest Early Access skill data.

Once you have the rod, equip it through your tools and look for fishing ripples along accessible shorelines and docks.

How to Fish in Loftia and Complete the Minigame

Fishing in Loftia involves casting your Collector Rod at an active fishing spot, waiting for a bite, and completing a timing-based minigame.

On keyboard and mouse, the documented fishing controls use the left mouse button to cast.

  1. Equip the Collector Rod and approach a fishing spot marked by ripples.
  2. Hold the left mouse button to prepare your cast.
  3. Aim toward the ripples and release your cast into the active area.
  4. Wait for a fish to respond.
  5. When the fishing minigame begins, click as the moving indicator enters the green success zone.
  6. Complete the required rings to secure your catch.

Different fishing encounters can have different levels of difficulty. For example, Bahia Brain Coral has a Medium fishing encounter with three rings.

The most important thing is to concentrate on completing each ring rather than rushing through the interaction.

How to Get Better at the Fishing Minigame

When the minigame begins, watch the moving indicator and time your click for the green zone.

Clicking randomly isn't an effective strategy, especially when later rings become more difficult.

Instead, focus on recognizing when the indicator is approaching the correct area and making one deliberate input.

If you're repeatedly failing a particular catch, spend some time practicing at a fishing spot you can complete consistently.

This isn't just useful for improving your technique. Successful fishing also awards considerably more experience than failing, so practicing easier encounters can help your Fishing skill progress.

Can You Catch Fish Instantly?

Yes. Loftia's fishing system includes an instant-catch star mechanic, allowing certain catches to finish without completing the normal sequence of timing rings.

There are also Fishing proficiency perks that can increase your chance of instantly catching a hooked fish.

For example, Instant Catch I becomes available at Fishing Level 15, while Instant Catch II appears at Level 20.

These abilities become more attractive when you're completing many fishing attempts and want to reduce the time spent on individual catches.

All 28 Fish and Fishing Locations in Loftia

Loftia's fishing collection includes 28 documented aquatic species. Different areas have different fishing pools, meaning you can't expect to catch everything by repeatedly fishing at the same shoreline.

The easiest way to find specific fish is to identify their habitat first, then look for the relevant fishing spots in that area.

Fishing Area Fish and Aquatic Species
Central Lake Atlantic Sturgeon, Giant Sea Bass, Nassau Grouper, Rainbow Trout, Seventyfour Seabream, Southern Bluefin Tuna
The Grove Bahia Brain Coral, Ivell's Sea Anemone, Japanese Spiky Sea Cucumber, Sunflower Sea Star
Bamboo Forest Bia Goby, European Mudminnow, Leafy Sea Dragon, Splendid Toadfish
Secret Lake Blind Cave Brotula, Blind Cave Eel, Haditha Cavefish, Texas Blind Salamander
The Hills Corroboree Frog, Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Splendid Poison Frog
Overgrowth Dalhousie Catfish, Moapa Dace, Red Handfish, Spring Pygmy Sunfish
Floating Village Allis Shad, Atlantic Salmon

These are the primary listed locations. Some species, including Haditha Cavefish, Allis Shad, and Atlantic Salmon, also have additional fishing locations recorded.

Find the Right Fishing Pool Before You Cast

The species you're targeting matters more than simply finding the nearest body of water.

For example, Bahia Brain Coral is found at Uncommon fishing spots in The Grove, alongside other possible catches such as Ivell's Sea Anemone and Sunflower Sea Star.

That means a successful catch at the correct location doesn't guarantee the exact species you're looking for.

The Grove has 10 marked fishing spots associated with this resource group, giving you several locations to check instead of relying on one.

If you're trying to collect a particular species for research, use the location table to narrow your search before starting.

A Better Way to Organize Your Fishing Trips

Instead of visiting every fishing area in a random order, plan each trip around a specific objective.

If you're collecting fish for the Heavy-Weight Titans research bundle, focus on Central Lake. The four required species are Seventyfour Seabream, Nassau Grouper, Giant Sea Bass, and Southern Bluefin Tuna.

If you're collecting Bahia Brain Coral for Still Standing, spend your time in The Grove instead. That bundle needs three Bahia Brain Coral, which can be obtained across fewer than three successful coral catches when you receive multiple items from one catch.

This approach avoids wasting fishing attempts in areas that don't contain the species you need.

How to Level Up Fishing Fast in Loftia

Fishing proficiency has a maximum level of 20, requiring 100,045 cumulative XP to reach the cap.

The amount of experience you receive depends on the outcome of each fishing attempt.

Fishing Activity Fishing XP
Critical Success18 XP
Successful Minigame12 XP
Fish Caught Without Minigame12 XP
Failed Minigame2 XP

A critical success gives 50% more base Fishing XP than a regular successful minigame.

More importantly, an ordinary successful catch awards six times as much XP as a failed attempt.

That creates a useful leveling strategy: prioritize fishing encounters you can complete consistently rather than repeatedly failing difficult catches in search of better rewards.

Focus on Successful Catches Before Bonus XP

Consider two fishing sessions with 10 attempts each.

Ten ordinary successful catches provide 120 XP, while ten failed attempts provide just 20 XP.

Even if a difficult spot appears more appealing, poor catching consistency can significantly reduce your experience gain.

I'd recommend practicing the minigame first, then investing in perks that improve your efficiency once you're regularly completing catches.

Reduce the Time Between Fishing Attempts

There are several parts to each fishing attempt: locating an active spot, casting, waiting for a bite, and completing the minigame.

As your skill improves, reducing those interruptions becomes increasingly useful.

Hungry Fish, unlocked at Level 10, makes fish bite 10% faster. Speedy Angler, available at Level 5, provides 15% movement speed for 10 seconds after fishing with the Collector Rod.

For players who frequently move between nearby spots, these are worth considering alongside perks that directly improve catch success.

At Level 20, Active Aquatics also increases fishing spot respawn speed by 15%.

Best Fishing Perks in Loftia

Fishing perks unlock at different skill levels, and the best choices depend on whether you want faster XP, easier minigames, or more resources per catch.

There are 15 documented Fishing perks in the Early Access Level 20 skill tree.

All Fishing Perk Unlock Levels

Level Available Perks and Effects
2 Ace Fisher I: 5% chance of earning double XP. Second Chance: 25% chance to immediately reset a failed minigame.
5 Fish Bag I: +5 fish capacity. Speedy Angler: +15% movement speed for 10 seconds after fishing. Ace Fisher II: additional 5% chance of double XP.
10 Fish Bag II: +10 fish capacity. Calm Waters I: 20% chance of an easier minigame. Hungry Fish: 10% faster bites. Friendly Fish I: 5% chance to double a catch.
15 Fish Bag III: +15 fish capacity. Calm Waters II: 30% chance of an easier minigame. Instant Catch I: 5% chance of instantly catching a hooked fish.
20 Instant Catch II: 10% chance of an instant catch. Friendly Fish II: 5% chance to double a catch. Active Aquatics: fishing spots respawn 15% faster.

These are the effects listed for the version 0.6.0 skill tree. Higher-level perks can also require Mastery Points, so remember to check both point costs before purchasing an upgrade.

Best Early Fishing Perk: Second Chance or Ace Fisher?

Both Second Chance and Ace Fisher I become available at Level 2, but they solve different problems.

Second Chance gives you a 25% chance of immediately restarting a failed minigame, making it useful if you're still learning the timing system.

Ace Fisher I gives you a 5% chance of receiving double XP, making it more attractive when you already complete catches reliably.

My recommendation is straightforward: if you're frequently missing the green timing zone, prioritize Second Chance. If you rarely fail, Ace Fisher offers an opportunity to improve your long-term leveling efficiency.

Best Level 10 Fishing Perks

Level 10 introduces several useful upgrades, but they serve different purposes.

  • Calm Waters I: Better for players struggling with more difficult fishing encounters.
  • Hungry Fish: Better for reducing downtime between catches.
  • Friendly Fish I: Better for collecting additional fish for research and contributions.
  • Fish Bag II: Better for longer fishing sessions where carrying capacity becomes an issue.

Instead of automatically choosing the perk with the largest percentage, consider what is actually slowing you down.

If you keep failing catches, faster bites won't address the problem. If you're catching everything successfully but waiting a long time between attempts, making the minigame easier may provide less practical value.

Best Perks for Research and Collection

For players gathering specific fish, Friendly Fish can be particularly useful because it provides a chance to double the catch.

This matters for research bundles that require multiple copies of the same species.

For example, Still Standing requires three Bahia Brain Coral. Receiving additional coral from a successful catch can reduce the number of times you need to catch that species.

However, Friendly Fish doesn't guarantee that the fish you're targeting will appear. You still need to use the correct fishing locations.

Fish Bag upgrades are also useful for longer collection sessions, particularly when you're gathering several different species before returning to a Research Station.

What to Do With Fish in Loftia

Fishing in Loftia is closely connected to research and community contributions.

Rather than treating every fish as something to sell immediately, consider whether it belongs to a research bundle or is accepted by a Contribution Bin.

Save Fish Needed for Research Bundles

Central Lake Research Station accepts several aquatic species for research.

Two useful examples are:

Research Bundle Required Fish
Heavy-Weight Titans 1 Seventyfour Seabream, 1 Nassau Grouper, 1 Giant Sea Bass, 1 Southern Bluefin Tuna
Still Standing 3 Bahia Brain Coral

Heavy-Weight Titans is particularly useful because completing it unlocks the Hammer Lv.2 crafting recipe.

This creates an additional reason to spend time fishing at Central Lake, even if you're primarily interested in progressing through crafting and gathering activities.

For Still Standing, you'll need to catch Bahia Brain Coral at the Grove fishing spots within the Hanging Gardens.

Use Floating Village Bins for Sols

Some fish can be contributed to Floating Village Bins in exchange for Sols.

Bahia Brain Coral, for example, is accepted by Floating Village Bin Lv.1 in the Hanging Gardens.

If you're collecting a fish that is also needed for research, I'd recommend setting aside the required research quantity before contributing any extras.

This keeps you from using up an uncommon or rare catch and needing to return to the same fishing location to collect it again.

Best Loftia Fishing Tips and Common Problems

Choose Your Fishing Spot Based on Your Goal

If you're practicing or farming XP, prioritize spots where you can consistently complete the minigame.

If you're gathering fish for a specific research bundle, prioritize the correct habitat and fishing pool instead.

Those are two different objectives, and the best location for one isn't necessarily the best for the other.

Don't Confuse Spot Rarity With a Guaranteed Catch

Uncommon and Rare fishing spots can contain multiple possible resources.

Finding an Uncommon fishing spot in The Grove means you're in the right general place for Bahia Brain Coral, but it doesn't guarantee every catch will reward it.

Likewise, discovering a new rare fishing location doesn't automatically mean you'll catch the rarest species there.

Check the species associated with the location and keep track of what you've actually obtained.

Stop Repeatedly Casting Into the Wrong Water

The Collector Rod is designed to interact with fishing spots marked by ripples.

If your cast isn't starting the expected interaction, reposition yourself and aim for an active fishing spot rather than casting repeatedly into ordinary water.

Fishing from a shoreline or dock can give you a clear view of the nearby ripples and help you line up your cast.

Improve Catch Consistency Before Investing in Speed

Since a successful minigame awards 12 XP and a failure awards only 2, completing catches reliably is one of the most important aspects of efficient leveling.

Speed-focused perks become more valuable once you can reliably handle the minigame.

Until then, Second Chance and Calm Waters are worth considering because they address the problem of failed attempts directly.

Use a Goal-Based Fishing Routine

One useful way to organize a fishing session is to decide what you're trying to accomplish before traveling to the water.

Your Goal Recommended Approach
Learning to fish Practice the casting and timing mechanics at accessible fishing spots.
Earning Fishing XP Prioritize successful catches, then invest in bonus XP and faster fishing perks.
Finding a specific species Identify its habitat and fishing pool before traveling.
Completing research Check bundle quantities and reserve required catches before contributing extras elsewhere.
Collecting many fish Consider Fish Bag and Friendly Fish upgrades to improve carrying capacity and catch quantity.

This approach can be more productive than fishing randomly and deciding what to do with the results afterward.

Don't Ignore Fishing Just Because You Prefer Crafting

Fishing supports more than its own proficiency level.

Some research bundles unlock useful crafting recipes, including the Hammer Lv.2 upgrade from Heavy-Weight Titans.

That means a short fishing session can contribute toward progress in another part of the game, even if fishing isn't your main activity.

For beginners, I'd recommend learning the Collector Rod early, practicing until the minigame becomes comfortable, and then focusing on the species needed for your current research goals.

As your Fishing level increases, choose perks based on whether you need more XP, easier catches, or larger collections. Combined with the correct fishing locations, that gives you a reliable way to develop your skill while supporting research and progression throughout Loftia.
