OSRS F2P Melee Combat Training Guide (2025)
Written by Andrew Hammel
This free-to-play melee guide covers the best spots to train Attack, Strength, and Defence from levels 1 to 99. Focus on high-hitpoint monsters with fast respawns and little downtime. Always bring your best scimitar and armor set for your level. Use strength-boosting gear if it raises your max hit.
Best Gear Setup (F2P Melee)
Use a rune scimitar at 40 Attack for best DPS. Before that, use an adamant or mithril scimitar, or barronite mace if you're an ironman. Amulet of strength gives best damage, but amulet of power adds accuracy. Stick to the highest chainbody, platelegs, and kiteshield you can equip.
Use leather gloves or d'hide vambraces if available. Decorative boots (gold) add +1 Strength but aren't worth the grind. Fancy/fighting boots from the Stronghold of Security are fine.
Levels 1 to 20
Start with chickens or monks. Chickens drop feathers and bones and don’t require food. Monks heal you for free and give better XP. Goblins, cows, and giant rats are good too. Use trout or cooked beef if you need healing.
Levels 20 to 40
Giant frogs in Lumbridge Swamp are great for XP and bones. Al Kharid warriors are aggressive and always attacking, but bring food. Minotaurs in the Stronghold of Security drop iron arrows and rune ess. Barbarians also drop early runes and gems.
Levels 40 to 70
Flesh Crawlers in the Stronghold are fast XP and always aggressive. Zombies in the same area are a decent backup. Both drop uncut gems and don't need high food supply. If you're geared well, hill giants offer better profit with limpwurt roots and big bones.
Levels 70 to 99
Giant spiders on the third floor of the Stronghold are best AFK XP in F2P. They’re aggressive and respawn fast, but bring good food since they can hit up to 7. Ogress warriors and shamans are best for GP, with tons of rune drops and alchables, but require protection prayers and food. Ankou are a solid backup with decent rune and clue drops.
Hybrid Training (XP + Profit)
Hill giants, hobgoblins, and moss giants are good if you want a mix of profit and XP. Hobgoblins drop runes and limpwurts. Moss giants drop black gear, nature runes, and mossy keys. Ice giants are stronger but drop similar loot. Lesser demons and ankous are good for rune drops and clues if you have food and time.
Alternative Methods
Use alt accounts in Clan Wars for ultra-fast XP if you’re using a 1 Defence pure with high Hitpoints. Castle Wars gives even higher XP rates using a castle wars bracelet and brew combo. Greater demons in the Demonic Ruins offer AFK prayer-based training but come with PK risk. Bring prayer gear and don’t stay long.
Final Blurb
In F2P, training melee is slow but steady. Rune scimitar, decent food, and aggressive monsters are all you need. Stack clue scrolls and alchables if you want profit while grinding, or hit the Stronghold spiders for brain-off XP. However, don’t expect 1m an hour without members.
