The seas of Gielinor are now a lot deadlier. Sailing’s expansion brings new Slayer creatures hidden across dangerous islands, each with their own mechanics, rewards, and unique drops worth hunting down.
Gryphons and the Shellbane Boss
The first of the Sailing Slayer additions are the Gryphons, apex predators found near The Great Conch. They’re aggressive, fast, and weak to Magic attacks, especially air spells. Players can expect knockback mechanics if their total weight is too low, so bring tanky gear or risk being tossed off your boat.
They’re an unlockable Slayer task starting at 51 Slayer and 45 Sailing. There’s also a superior variant, plus the Shellbane Gryphon, a new mid-level Slayer boss that can only be fought on-task.
Notable Drops
Gryphon Feathers, used to charge the Horn of Plenty.
Horn of Plenty, an off-hand Hunter item giving +2 to +4 invisible Hunter boost and a 1/10 chance to double catches when charged.
Gleaming Rapier, a tier 65 stab weapon between the Dragon Sword and Zamorakian Hasta, polished at the Giant’s Foundry with 70 Smithing.
The Gryphon fight rewards mid-game players looking for unique PvM content tied to skilling, and the Shellbane’s mechanics make it a great stepping stone before higher-tier Slayer bosses.
Aquanites and the Aquanite Hopper
Deep under the seas near Ynysdail Island, the Aquanites lurk. These amphibious horrors strike with high accuracy and special mechanics that test your prayer-switching speed. You’ll need 78 Slayer and 73 Sailing to fight them, and they appear in single-way combat zones.
Their Elder Aquanite superiors are even nastier, though they offer stronger loot.
Unique Drop
Aquanite Tendon, used to craft the Aquanite Hopper, a ranged off-hand made with a Mithril bar. It gives crossbows a 10% chance to fire twice, though the second bolt deals 67% reduced accuracy and damage.
The Aquanite Hopper offers a strong mid-game ranged boost without rivaling the Twisted Buckler, ideal for players grinding Slayer with crossbows.
Lava Strykewyrms on Charred Island
Head to Charred Island, and you’ll find the Lava Strykewyrms, fierce creatures born from volcanic eruptions. They attack with melee and ranged, occasionally burrowing underground for surprise attacks.
You’ll face them as part of regular Wyrm Slayer tasks, requiring 62 Slayer and 60 Sailing. Cannons can’t be used here, and the Magma Strykewyrm superior variant is even more dangerous.
Unique Drops
Strykewyrm Bones, granting 60 Prayer XP when buried.
Dragon Sheet, a shipbuilding material used for high-tier Sailing upgrades.
They’re ideal for players chasing both Prayer XP and crafting materials for their ship builds.
Frost Dragons of Grimstone
At Grimstone, one of the northernmost frozen islands, dwell the Frost Dragons. These icy beasts strike with melee and freezing dragonfire that requires antifire protection.
Frost Dragons can be assigned as Slayer tasks or fought freely once unlocked, requiring 87 Sailing and 85 Combat (as confirmed by gb-proxy). They’re single-combat only and immune to cannons.
Unique Drops
Frost Dragon Bones, giving 100 Prayer XP, sitting between Lava Dragon and Hydra bones.
Burbs, used to increase sailing speed, but not released at launch.
Dragon Sheet, used for shipbuilding like their fiery counterparts.
They’re the most dangerous of all the new Sailing Slayer monsters, but easily among the most profitable.
Final Blurb
Sailing’s Slayer creatures open a whole new frontier for adventurers ready to brave the open sea. From Gryphons and Aquanites to the elemental Strykewyrms and Frost Dragons, each fight liunks directly into Sailing’s economy and progression system. Regardless of if you’re after bones, feathers, tendons, or sheets, there’s no shortage of high-value loot waiting across the ocean... SO GET OUT THERE ALREADY!
