Resident Evil Requiem: How To Change Difficulty

Resident Evil Requiem (AKA Resident Evil 9) lets you choose your difficulty at the start of a new game, but changing it mid playthrough is limited. Only Standard Modern can be lowered to Casual after dying multiple times. All other difficulty settings are locked once selected.

If you are trying to switch difficulty, here is exactly what you can and cannot do.

How To Change Difficulty In Resident Evil Requiem

Lowering From Standard Modern To Casual

If you start on Standard Modern and die several times in a row, the game will offer you the option to lower the difficulty to Casual on the game over screen.

To do this:

  • Die multiple times in the same section

  • Select the option to lower difficulty when prompted

Once you switch to Casual, you cannot switch back to Standard Modern during that playthrough.

This also affects certain difficulty based achievements.

Can You Increase Difficulty Mid Game

No. You cannot raise the difficulty after starting.

If you begin on Casual, Standard Classic, or Insanity, you are locked into that difficulty for the entire run.

To change to a higher difficulty, you must:

  • Return to the main menu

  • Start a new game

  • Select your desired difficulty

Progress does not carry over unless you are using New Game Plus.

All Difficulty Options Explained

Resident Evil Requiem includes 4 difficulty settings.

Casual

  • Heavy aim assist

This is the most flexible difficulty since it allows lowering to Casual.

  • No difficulty change allowed

Designed for classic survival horror fans.

Insanity

  • Same save system as Standard Classic

Intended for challenge runs and 100% completion.

Final Blurb

If you want to change difficulty in Resident Evil Requiem, your only option mid game is lowering Standard Modern to Casual after repeated deaths. Every other difficulty is locked once you begin.

If you are unsure which to choose, start with Standard Modern for flexibility. You can always restart on a higher difficulty later if you want a bigger challenge.
