Shift At Midnight Norbert: Should You Kill Him?

Shift At Midnight Norbert: Should You Kill Him?

Norbert is one of the few Shift At Midnight visitors who does not fit neatly into the normal human-or-Doppelganger decision. His identification is suspicious, some player lists classify him as a Doppelganger, and his later appearances can become openly hostile. However, killing him during the first encounter may create more trouble than simply taking his money and letting him leave. The best choice depends on which version of Norbert has entered the store.

Should You Kill Norbert in Shift At Midnight?

Do not kill Norbert during his first normal visit. Let him buy his items, complete the sale, and leave the store.

This is the lowest-risk choice because Norbert pays for his purchase and does not immediately attack you during that encounter. Eliminating him provides no confirmed major reward, while sparing him preserves the transaction and may avoid triggering some of his revenge behavior.

That recommendation changes during later appearances. If Norbert returns on a motorcycle, hides inside another body, or offers a harmful drink after being killed previously, you are no longer dealing with the same harmless checkout interaction.

The useful rule is not “always spare Norbert” or “always shoot Norbert.” Serve him during the first customer encounter, then judge later versions by what they are actively doing.

Why Norbert Does Not Follow the Normal Doppelganger Rules

Norbert creates confusion because the available information does not describe him consistently. Some customer lists label him as a Doppelganger, while other player accounts describe him as a separate chaotic character who does not transform into a standard post-shift monster.

His fake identification would normally be enough to justify eliminating a suspicious customer. In most Shift At Midnight encounters, invalid documents or information that conflicts with the NET Database are major warning signs.

Norbert’s actual behavior complicates that rule. He can make a legitimate purchase, pay the store, and leave without attacking. His later encounters also include forms that are more scripted and unusual than the normal customer-to-Entity progression.

The most accurate way to approach him is as a special encounter with multiple states. His first checkout appearance has one solution, while the lemonade, motorcycle, and disguise versions require different responses.

What to Do During the First Norbert Encounter

When the small gnome reaches the counter, process his purchase normally. Accept the payment, sell him the requested items, and allow him to leave.

Do not shoot him solely because his ID appears fake. The first encounter is one of the rare moments where following the usual document-checking rule too aggressively can create an unnecessary escalation.

There is also a direct financial advantage to restraint. Completing the transaction adds another sale to the shift, while attacking him before checkout sacrifices the purchase and may start the chain of later revenge events.

Once he leaves, return to normal store management. You do not need to follow him outside, barricade the store, or prepare for a guaranteed Entity hunt simply because he was allowed to complete the sale.

What Happens If You Kill Norbert?

Killing Norbert can cause him to return in a more hostile form. One reported follow-up involves Norbert attempting to give the player a suspicious lemonade as revenge.

The drink can reduce health and create a visual effect after it is consumed. It does not appear to provide a useful buff, story reward, or hidden benefit that justifies drinking it.

Killing Norbert does not appear to permanently remove him from the game. Instead, it may make later encounters more disruptive than his original visit.

There is no confirmed evidence that the first kill is required for an ending, major reward, or progression unlock. Unless you deliberately want to see his stranger events, sparing him during the first visit is the cleaner route.

Should You Drink Norbert’s Lemonade?

Do not drink the lemonade Norbert offers during the revenge encounter. The reported result is lost health and an altered visual effect, both of which make the rest of the shift harder.

The lemonade should be treated as a trap rather than a normal consumable. It is not part of a customer transaction and does not need to be accepted to continue the story.

Health is more valuable than curiosity, especially if the current night contains a possible Entity hunt or another special creature. Entering a chase with reduced health because you tested Norbert’s drink is an avoidable disadvantage.

In co-op, warn the group before someone else picks it up. A teammate who missed the earlier Norbert encounter may assume the drink is a harmless item or healing resource.

What to Do When Norbert Arrives on a Motorcycle

Norbert can return on a motorcycle and cause chaos around the store. This appearance should not be handled like his first customer visit.

Eliminate him before he can continue the event. The motorcycle itself is enough to show that this is an active disruption rather than another attempt to buy products.

Do not stand in front of the vehicle while trying to confirm the rider’s identity. Create space, identify the event, and respond before he has time to interfere with the store or players.

In multiplayer, call out the motorcycle immediately. A short warning gives everyone time to move away from the entrance and prevents another player from mistaking Norbert for an ordinary arrival.

How to Identify Norbert When He Is Disguised

Norbert can also appear hidden inside the body of a woman. The outside appearance may not provide an obvious clue, so visual inspection alone is unreliable.

Use the scanner on the body. The scan reveals the smaller Norbert figure inside the disguise and confirms what you are actually dealing with.

Once the scanner exposes him, eliminate him. The disguise encounter is not another harmless checkout visit, and there is no reason to continue treating the body as an ordinary customer after Norbert has been found inside it.

This encounter is another reason the normal NET Database routine is not enough for every version of Norbert. The database helps verify customer records, but the scanner is the decisive tool for the disguised form.

How to Handle Every Later Norbert Appearance

Later Norbert encounters should be judged by behavior rather than by applying the first-visit decision repeatedly.

If he returns with lemonade, refuse the drink. If he arrives on the motorcycle, stop him before he creates more chaos. If he is concealed inside another body, scan the disguise and eliminate him after confirmation.

Do not assume that sparing the first Norbert means every later appearance must also be spared. The first visit is peaceful because he behaves like a paying customer. The later forms involve deception, retaliation, or a direct disturbance.

Likewise, do not assume that killing him once means you should fire at every small figure without checking the situation. Norbert’s encounter is easier to manage when you identify which version is active before committing to a response.

Does Norbert Affect the $250 Surgery Route?

Norbert does not appear to be a required part of reaching the best ending, but the way you handle him can still affect the financial efficiency of the run.

Serving him during the first encounter preserves the sale. Starting an unnecessary fight can cost the transaction, consume ammunition, create cleanup work, or lead to later disruptions that pull you away from customers.

That makes sparing him the better choice during a run focused on maximizing personal funds. Our Shift At Midnight $250 surgery guide explains how store quotas, penalties, medicine purchases, and personal savings determine whether you can pay for the operation.

Norbert should not become the center of the financial strategy. Take the easy first sale, avoid his harmful drink, and deal with later hostile versions quickly enough that the rest of the shift can continue.

Norbert Is Completely Different From the Dentist

Norbert and the Dentist are both unusual encounters, but using the same response against them would be a serious mistake.

Norbert’s first appearance can be resolved at the checkout counter. The Dentist is a pursuit threat where the known response is to run, stay quiet, and avoid looking back.

Do not flee merely because Norbert enters the shop, and do not stop to investigate or negotiate once the Dentist begins chasing you.

Our Shift At Midnight Dentist guide explains how to recognize him, why normal Entity tactics are unreliable, and what to do during the chase.

How to Handle Norbert in Co-Op

Norbert becomes more dangerous in co-op when different players make conflicting decisions. One person may recognize the first encounter and try to complete the sale while another reacts to the fake ID and immediately fires.

Use clear callouts that identify the version of the event. During the first visit, say that Norbert should be served. During later encounters, call out the lemonade, motorcycle, or scanner-confirmed disguise.

Only one player should control the first checkout interaction. The others can watch the store and avoid creating confusion around the counter.

During the disguise encounter, let one player operate the scanner while the others maintain distance. Crowding around the body makes it harder to react if the event suddenly becomes hostile.

Do not allow curiosity to override the agreed plan. Once the group knows that the lemonade causes negative effects, there is no reason for another player to drink it for confirmation.

Common Norbert Encounter Mistakes

The most common mistake is killing Norbert immediately because his ID appears fake. That follows the normal Doppelganger logic but ignores the special behavior of his first encounter.

Another mistake is treating every later Norbert as harmless because the first one paid and left. The motorcycle and disguised forms are clearly different situations.

Drinking the lemonade is also unnecessary. Its known effects are harmful, and it does not provide a confirmed reward.

Players can miss the disguised Norbert by relying on appearance instead of using the scanner. The body is designed to conceal him, so guessing from clothing or facial features is less dependable than checking directly.

Finally, do not waste an entire shift trying to force more Norbert content. His encounters are memorable, but they are not established as necessary for saving your pet, protecting Clyde, or completing the main Story Mode objective.

The Best Norbert Route

Serve Norbert during his first visit. Let him purchase the items, take the money, and leave without turning the encounter into a fight.

If he later returns with lemonade, refuse it. If he arrives on a motorcycle, stop him before the event escalates. If the scanner reveals him inside a disguise, eliminate him after confirming what is there.

This route gets the benefit of the first sale while avoiding the mistake of treating his hostile forms like ordinary customers.

Norbert is not a character who should receive one permanent verdict. His first encounter rewards restraint, while his later appearances reward recognition and a faster response.
