Umamusume Pretty Derby How To Edit Team
Editing your team in Umamusume Pretty Derby isn’t locked behind menus, it’s locked behind progression. The game expects you to go through Career mode first, and until that happens, your team options stay limited even if you have new characters.
How To Change Team In Umamusume Pretty Derby
You can only edit your team in Umamusume Pretty Derby after completing Career mode with a character, which creates a Veteran version that can be added to your team.
New characters you pull are not immediately usable in Race mode. They start as trainees, and trainees cannot be added to your team.
Once you finish a Career run, the game creates a Veteran version of that character. That version is what actually shows up in team selection.
To edit your team:
Go to Enhance
Select Veteran Umamusume
Choose Edit Team
Quick Guide
Pulling a character does not unlock them for team use
Complete Career mode once to unlock them
Career creates a Veteran version
Only Veterans can be added to your team
Edit team via Enhance → Veteran Umamusume
Why You Can’t Edit Your Team Yet
The game isn’t restricting you for no reason. You simply don’t have usable versions of your characters.
If a character hasn’t gone through Career mode:
They won’t appear in the team menu
You can’t select them
Your team feels stuck with limited options
This is why early on it feels like nothing is changing, even after pulling multiple characters.
Once you complete your first run, the system opens up immediately and you start rotating in better versions.
How Leveling Works In Umamusume Pretty Derby
This is where expectations from other games cause confusion.
There is no traditional leveling system for characters in Umamusume Pretty Derby.
You don’t level characters through races or passive progression. Instead, every Career run builds a new version of that character with its own stats.
During Career mode:
You train stats directly
You shape the build through decisions and support cards
You finish with a completed version of that character
That finished version becomes your usable unit.
Why Your Characters Stay “Level 1”
It’s not a bug or a missing feature.
Every time you start Career mode, the character begins from the same baseline. The strength comes from how well you train them during the run.
What actually improves over time:
Your understanding of training routes
Your support card setups
The inherited traits from previous runs
So instead of leveling a single unit, you’re constantly replacing them with better versions.
How The Team Building Loop Works
Once you understand the loop, everything clicks.
Start Career mode with a character
Train them through the run
Finish the run
Get a Veteran version
Add that version to your team
Repeat to improve results
You’re not upgrading a fixed roster. You’re building a better one every run.
Final Blurb
Umamusume Pretty Derby handles teams differently from most games. Characters don’t become usable until you finish a Career run with them, and progression comes from creating stronger versions, not leveling a base unit.
Once that clicks, the system stops feeling locked. You start cycling characters into your team naturally as your runs improve, and that’s where real progression comes from.
