WoW Forever: Best Professions for Mage

Choosing professions for your Mage in WoW Forever has a bigger impact than simply making gold or crafting equipment. New class-specific gear, profession-exclusive weapons, and additional crafting benefits make certain combinations particularly valuable, especially when you're planning to specialize in Frost, Fire, or Arcane.

Best Professions for Mage in WoW Forever

The best professions for Mage in WoW Forever are Tailoring and Enchanting. This combination gives you access to powerful Bind on Pickup cloth equipment, exclusive crafted weapons, spell damage enchants, and a convenient way to obtain Enchanting materials from the gear you create.

Tailoring is particularly valuable because WoW Forever introduces cloth equipment designed around individual Mage damage schools. Rather than crafting generic caster gear and hoping it suits your build, you can work toward equipment that specifically improves Arcane, Frost, or Fire damage.

Enchanting complements this by providing additional equipment options, including new staves and wands, while letting you disenchant unwanted Tailoring crafts for materials.

For most Mages, I'd recommend keeping both professions throughout leveling and into endgame. However, Engineering becomes an attractive alternative for PvP-focused players, while Skinning is worth considering if your priority is earning gold without investing in a second crafting profession.

Why Tailoring Is One of the Best Mage Professions

Tailoring has always been a natural choice for cloth-wearing classes, but WoW Forever gives Mages an especially compelling reason to learn it. Several of the new crafted sets are Bind on Pickup, meaning you must have the profession and craft the equipment yourself to use it.

This makes Tailoring more than a way to save money on gear. It provides access to equipment you cannot simply purchase from another player on the Auction House.

Best Tailoring Gear for Frost, Fire, and Arcane Mage

Three notable Tailoring sets provide damage bonuses tailored to the Mage's primary spell schools.

Mage Build Crafted Set Bonus Focus
Arcane Filigreed Pearly Arcane damage
Frost Filigreed Silky Frost damage
Fire Filigreed Flame Fire damage

Each set includes a Circlet, Gown, and Leggings. The Filigreed Pearly set is particularly interesting for Arcane Mages, while the Silky and Flame sets provide options for players concentrating on Frost or Fire spells.

I would prioritize the set matching your current damage school rather than crafting every version immediately. Having access to multiple sets is useful if you plan to change builds, but spending materials on equipment that doesn't benefit your current spells may slow down other upgrades.

Tailoring also produces useful leveling equipment outside these sets, along with bags that can be sold to other players. Since cloth drops from enemies while questing, you don't need to dedicate another primary profession to gathering its basic materials.

That flexibility is one of Tailoring's biggest advantages. You can develop your crafting profession alongside normal leveling without having to pair it with a dedicated gathering profession.

Why Enchanting Works So Well With Tailoring

Enchanting is my preferred second profession for Mage because it supports several different parts of your progression instead of offering only one benefit.

WoW Forever expands Enchanting beyond traditional gear enhancements by introducing additional crafted weapons. The Glimmering Staff and Twisted Nether Wand are two examples worth considering, with powerful options that can compete with weapons obtained through ordinary gameplay.

Some of these crafted weapons are Bind on Pickup, so learning Enchanting yourself provides access that you wouldn't have by simply purchasing an item from another player.

Turn Unwanted Tailoring Gear Into Enchanting Materials

The biggest practical advantage of pairing Tailoring with Enchanting is how the two professions support each other while leveling.

Tailoring produces cloth equipment, including green and blue items that you may eventually replace or have no reason to equip. Instead of selling every unwanted item to a vendor, you can disenchant suitable equipment to obtain materials for improving your Enchanting skill.

This creates a useful progression cycle where crafting gear also contributes toward developing your second profession. It doesn't eliminate material costs entirely, but it reduces how dependent you are on buying Enchanting materials separately.

Enchanting also provides access to spell damage enhancements such as Enchant 2H Weapon - Mighty Spell Power. WoW Forever introduces additional enchanting opportunities, including neck enhancements, giving you more ways to improve your equipment.

Both professions contribute to camp utility as well. Tailoring offers a Faction Banner that provides Spirit, while Enchanting's Enchanted Lute grants a collection of stat, armor, and resistance benefits. These can be useful additions to a group's camp setup, although certain camp buffs don't stack with equivalent class buffs.

Best Alternative Professions for Mage

Tailoring and Enchanting offer the strongest overall combination, but they aren't necessarily the best choice for every playstyle. Mages who primarily enjoy PvP or want a simpler way to earn gold may benefit from changing their second profession.

Engineering for PvP Mages

Engineering is one of the strongest alternatives for players who frequently participate in PvP. Its gadgets provide utility that goes beyond simply increasing spell damage, including tools such as Rocket Boots, the Net-o-Matic, and other equipment useful during encounters with enemy players.

For a PvP-focused Mage, I'd consider Tailoring and Engineering instead of Tailoring and Enchanting. You retain access to your class-specific cloth equipment while gaining another source of utility that can influence how fights play out.

Engineering is also especially appealing for Gnome Mages because of their Engineering Specialization racial bonus.

The main trade-off is losing the convenience of disenchanting your own Tailoring crafts and access to Enchanting-exclusive equipment. If PvP is your primary activity, that may be a worthwhile exchange.

Skinning for Gold While Leveling

If you're more interested in earning gold than maintaining two crafting professions, Skinning is a straightforward alternative to Enchanting.

Skinning works particularly well when you're regularly killing beasts because you can collect leather from suitable enemies without searching for separate gathering nodes. Mages farming groups of enemies can potentially gather substantial amounts of leather when their chosen farming locations contain skinnable creatures.

Pairing Skinning with Tailoring lets you continue crafting your own cloth equipment while collecting materials that can be sold to other players.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend Skinning over Enchanting for a Mage focused on maximizing personal equipment options, but it makes sense for players who want a less demanding secondary profession while leveling.

Is Alchemy Worth Taking as a Mage?

Alchemy provides access to potions and other consumables that can be valuable during difficult encounters. However, many of these items can also be purchased from the Auction House, making the profession less essential for a Mage who doesn't specifically want to produce their own supplies.

Herbalism and Alchemy can still be a practical combination for players who prefer gathering and consumable production, but I'd favor Tailoring and Enchanting when the goal is gaining access to Mage-specific equipment.

Don't Forget Mage Comprehension in WoW Forever

WoW Forever also introduces Comprehension, a Mage-specific progression system that doesn't require replacing your chosen primary professions.

Comprehension allows Mages to use Comprehend Scroll to decipher special scrolls. These can provide powerful buffs, making the system useful beyond traditional equipment crafting.

As you develop Comprehension and gain access to stronger scrolls, it can also become an additional way to earn gold. This gives Mages another profession-related opportunity without having to sacrifice Tailoring, Enchanting, or another primary profession.

Crafting professions also contribute to the Legacy system, with profession challenges at 150, 225, and 300 skill providing account-wide Legacy Points. This gives you another reason to continue developing Tailoring and Enchanting rather than abandoning them once you've crafted a useful piece of equipment.

For most Mages in WoW Forever, Tailoring and Enchanting remain the best overall choice because they combine exclusive equipment, useful weapons, and complementary crafting progression. Engineering is worth considering if PvP is your focus, while Skinning offers a simpler way to earn gold during leveling. Whichever combination you choose, make sure you're taking advantage of the crafted equipment and progression opportunities that directly benefit your Mage build.
