WoW Housing How to Make Dye
World of Warcraft

Color adds life to your home in World of Warcraft’s housing system. Dyes let you recolor furniture, walls, and decor so your setup feels completely yours. Before you can start designing, you’ll need to learn how to make the dyes first.

How to Craft Dyes

To make dyes, you need a character with Alchemy or Inscription. Both professions can craft dyes immediately after learning their Classic versions. You don’t need to unlock anything extra.

The process takes two steps. First, you create pigments from herbs. Each batch of 10 herbs gives 1 pigment. The herb type decides the color you’ll get, not the quality, so always use whatever’s cheapest at the Auction House.

Once you’ve gathered herbs, convert them into pigments. Alchemists use Distill Herbs, while Scribes use Mill Herbs. This gives you the raw pigment needed for dye recipes.

Next, go to a Dye Crafting Table. These are found in major housing hubs across each faction’s home area. When you interact with the table, combine your pigment with a simple reagent like an Alchemical Binder or Inscriber’s Resin to finish the dye.

Example recipes include:

  • 1 Black Pigment + 1 Binder = Obsidium Black Dye

  • 1 Blue Pigment + 1 Binder = Nazjatar Navy Dye

  • 1 Red Pigment + 1 Binder = Horde Red Dye

Each finished dye is added to your inventory and can be sold, traded, or used directly on your home decor.

Gathering Pigments

Different herbs make different pigments. Here are a few examples:

  • Fadeleaf makes Black Pigment

  • Silverleaf makes Blue Pigment

  • Mage Royal makes Red Pigment

  • Peacebloom makes White Pigment

  • Sungrass makes Yellow Pigment

Older herbs are usually cheaper and work just as well as new ones, so don’t waste gold on high-level materials.

How to Use Dyes

Open your Housing Customization Menu and select any item that supports dyeing. A color drop icon will appear next to it. Click it, choose your crafted dye, and apply it instantly. You can swap dyes any time without losing the item or the color you used before.

Final Blurb

Making dyes in WoW’s housing system is simple once you know where to start. Crafting them yourself keeps costs low and gives you full control over your home’s style. Stock up on herbs, grab some reagents, and soon you’ll be mixing colors like a professional decorator.
