Ace Combat 8 Drop Tanks: How to Unlock & Equip

Drop Tanks are one of Ace Combat 8's post-Campaign aircraft parts, but they work differently from almost every other upgrade in the Aircraft Tree. They occupy a real part slot and can be manually jettisoned during a sortie, yet their purpose is much more about fighter-jet immersion than improving your build.

How to Get Drop Tanks in Ace Combat 8

To unlock Drop Tanks in Ace Combat 8, complete the Campaign once. After the Campaign clear, a new Drop Tank node becomes available in the Aircraft Tree immediately after the F-35C and costs 100,000 MRP.

You do not need to start New Game Plus or complete the Campaign on a specific difficulty. A normal Campaign clear is enough to make the post-game part available.

Drop Tank Unlock
Requirement → Complete the Campaign
New Game Plus → Not required
Aircraft Tree Location → First node after the F-35C
Cost → 100,000 MRP
Category → MISC Part

If you are looking through the Aircraft Tree before finishing the story and cannot find Drop Tanks anywhere, you have not missed a hidden branch. The node is a post-Campaign unlock.

The Ace Combat 8 Aircraft Tree guide covers the wider unlock paths if you are still deciding where to spend MRP before reaching the post-game parts.

How to Equip Drop Tanks

After purchasing the 100,000-MRP node, equip Drop Tanks from your aircraft's parts loadout before a sortie.

They are categorized as a MISC part, which means they use one of your available MISC part slots just like a functional aircraft upgrade would.

How to Equip Drop Tanks
1. Complete the Campaign
2. Open the Aircraft Tree
3. Purchase the Drop Tank node for 100,000 MRP
4. Open your aircraft's parts loadout
5. Equip Drop Tank in a MISC slot
6. Begin the sortie

The important tradeoff is the slot itself. Even though Drop Tanks do not provide a gameplay stat bonus, they still consume space that could otherwise hold a functional MISC part.

What Do Drop Tanks Do in Ace Combat 8?

Drop Tanks are purely cosmetic in Ace Combat 8.

They do not increase fuel capacity, extend mission range, improve endurance, increase ammunition, or provide any other aircraft performance bonus.

That can be surprising because real external fuel tanks exist specifically to increase an aircraft's range. Ace Combat 8 includes the visual and jettison mechanic without introducing a fuel-management system around them.

Drop Tank Effects
Extra Fuel → No
Extra Range → No
Performance Bonus → No
Stat Changes → No
Can Be Jettisoned → Yes
Main Purpose → Visuals and immersion

The developers have also stated that carrying or dropping the tanks does not change aircraft performance. The mechanic exists primarily to recreate the look and feel of real combat aircraft carrying external tanks before releasing them.

How to Jettison Drop Tanks

Once Drop Tanks are equipped and visible on your aircraft, hold the weapon-switch button during a sortie to release them.

The tanks physically separate from the aircraft, giving you the classic external-tank jettison effect before entering combat.

Dropping them does not make the aircraft lighter, faster, more maneuverable, or otherwise stronger. There is no hidden benefit for waiting until a dogfight begins before releasing them.

You can therefore treat the timing entirely as a visual choice. Keep them attached during the approach, drop them before engaging the enemy, or release them whenever it looks best for the sortie.

Do Drop Tanks Give You More Fuel?

No. Ace Combat 8 Drop Tanks do not increase fuel.

The Campaign includes refueling sequences, but the game does not turn fuel quantity into a normal player-managed aircraft resource. Equipping external tanks therefore does not let you fly longer or bypass those sequences.

They should be treated as an optional cosmetic aircraft part rather than a fuel upgrade.

Drop Tanks Still Use a MISC Part Slot

The unusual part of the system is that a cosmetic-only item still takes up a functional MISC slot.

That makes Drop Tanks different from a normal skin or paint scheme. Equipping them means voluntarily giving up a slot that could be used for an actual aircraft upgrade.

If you are attempting difficult missions, S ranks, or other high-performance challenges, that slot is generally better spent on something that improves the aircraft.

The Ace Combat 8 best parts guide covers the upgrades worth using when performance matters more than appearance.

Do Drop Tanks Work With Every Loadout?

Drop Tank compatibility can vary with aircraft and special-weapon configurations. Some loadouts may not display the tanks because the external hardpoints or weapon arrangement conflict with them.

If you have the Drop Tank part equipped but cannot see the tanks on the aircraft, try changing the selected special weapon or checking another compatible aircraft before assuming the part failed to equip.

This does not change the underlying function: whenever the tanks are available on the selected setup, they remain cosmetic and can be manually jettisoned.

Do You Need to Beat Elite Difficulty?

No. The Drop Tank unlock is tied to finishing the Campaign, not finishing it on Elite.

You can clear the story on a lower difficulty and still unlock the post-game Aircraft Tree node.

Elite matters for separate completion goals, including unlocking Ace difficulty. If you are planning another Campaign run after getting Drop Tanks, the Ace Combat 8 Elite difficulty guide explains what changes and whether it is worth choosing for a first or repeat playthrough.

Are Drop Tanks Worth Using?

Drop Tanks are worth buying if you want the visual effect, but they are not worth equipping for aircraft performance.

The 100,000 MRP cost is relatively straightforward once you are in the post-game, but the more meaningful cost is the MISC slot. For casual Campaign replays, screenshots, cinematic flying, and roleplaying, that tradeoff may not matter at all.

For Ace difficulty, S-rank attempts, or tightly optimized builds, a functional part will usually be the better choice.

Bottom Line
Unlock them by completing the Campaign.
Buy the post-game node after the F-35C for 100,000 MRP.
Equip them in a MISC part slot.
Hold the weapon-switch button to jettison them.
They are cosmetic and provide no performance or fuel benefit.
