Cyberpunk 2077 2.5 Won't Launch Fix Guide

If Cyberpunk 2077 won't launch after Update 2.5, the first thing to check is your installed mods. Older versions of RED4ext and other mod frameworks can prevent the game from starting, even when the launcher opens normally. If you don't use mods, there are separate fixes for missing game files, graphics driver errors, and black screens. Here's how to identify the problem and get Cyberpunk 2077 running again without immediately reinstalling everything.

Cyberpunk 2077 2.5 Not Launching With Mods

One of the most common causes of startup crashes after Update 2.5 is an incompatible mod framework. RED4ext has been associated with the game closing immediately after REDlauncher, particularly when older plugins are still installed.

Other frameworks, including ArchiveXL, TweakXL, Codeware, Cyber Engine Tweaks, and redscript, also need versions compatible with the update. Updating one framework doesn't guarantee that every mod depending on it will work.

Fix 1: Launch With a Clean Mod Profile

If you use Vortex, test the game without your installed mods before changing anything else.

How to Test Without Mods:
  1. Close Cyberpunk 2077 and REDlauncher.
  2. Open Vortex and create a new profile with no mods enabled.
  3. Use Vortex's Purge Mods option to remove deployed mod files from the game directory.
  4. Check whether manually installed mod files are still present.
  5. Launch Cyberpunk 2077 again with the clean profile.

If the game opens normally, one or more mods are incompatible with Update 2.5. You can then check for updated framework versions before restoring the rest of your mod setup.

Don't permanently delete your entire mod collection just to test this. Moving or disabling incompatible files is safer, especially if you plan to return to your previous setup.

Fix 2: Check for Leftover RED4ext Files

If disabling mods doesn't help, open your Cyberpunk 2077 installation folder. On a typical Steam installation, this is:

Steam\steamapps\common\Cyberpunk 2077

Look for the red4ext folder and other files installed by external mod frameworks. Temporarily move the incompatible framework files outside the game directory, keeping a backup so you can restore them later.

Don't assume that disabling mods through REDlauncher removes these files. Manually installed plugins can remain in the game directory even when mod options are turned off.

Try launching again after removing the incompatible files from the installation. If Cyberpunk starts, you've narrowed the problem to the mod framework or one of its dependencies.

Some framework updates were released around the arrival of Patch 2.5, but compatibility also depends on the plugins using them. Check that your entire mod setup supports version 2.5 before re-enabling everything.

If your existing save relies on mods, don't overwrite it during testing. Removing essential gameplay mods can cause problems when loading a save that depends on them.

Cyberpunk 2077 2.5 Won't Launch Without Mods

Players with completely unmodded installations have also reported the game refusing to start after updating. If you've never installed mods, or you've confirmed that the problem happens on a clean installation, begin with game file verification.

Fix 3: Verify Cyberpunk 2077 Game Files

A damaged or incomplete update can prevent the executable from opening. Verifying the installation checks the game files and downloads replacements when necessary.

Verify Files on Steam:
  1. Open your Steam Library.
  2. Right-click Cyberpunk 2077 and select Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Click Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Allow Steam to complete the check and download any missing files.
  6. Restart Steam and try launching the game again.

On GOG Galaxy, select Cyberpunk 2077, then Manage Installation and Verify/Repair. On Epic Games, open the game's Manage menu and select Verify.

If you previously removed mods, verification is useful after cleaning the installation. However, it won't necessarily remove leftover third-party files, since those aren't all part of the normal game installation.

Fix 4: Reset REDlauncher

If REDlauncher fails to open, closes unexpectedly, or never starts the game after you press Play, try resetting the launcher itself.

First, close Steam and REDlauncher completely. Open Windows File Explorer and navigate to:

%localappdata%\Programs\CD Projekt Red\

Find the REDlauncher folder and rename it as a backup. Then restart Steam and launch Cyberpunk 2077 again so the launcher can recreate the necessary files.

Also remove any custom launch options you've previously added in Steam's game properties while testing the default startup process.

If the launcher works but the game still closes, continue with the remaining fixes rather than repeatedly resetting REDlauncher.

Fix 5: Update Graphics Drivers and Disable Overlays

Outdated graphics drivers and conflicting background applications can also prevent Cyberpunk 2077 from launching.

Download the latest driver supported by your actual graphics card from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Restart your PC after installing it, then test Cyberpunk again.

Temporarily disable overlays such as Discord, Steam Overlay, and GPU monitoring software. If the game starts afterward, re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict.

If the issue continues, repairing or reinstalling the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages for both x64 and x86 is another troubleshooting option.

Cyberpunk 2077 2.5 Black Screen or Driver Error Fix

Not every launch problem looks the same. Some players can hear the menu music while the screen remains completely black. Others receive a graphics driver warning before the game closes.

Fix 6: Disable Windows HDR for a Black Screen

If Cyberpunk launches but displays a black screen with audio playing, try temporarily disabling HDR in Windows.

How to Disable HDR:
  1. Close Cyberpunk 2077.
  2. Open Windows Settings.
  3. Go to System, then Display.
  4. Select your gaming monitor and open its HDR settings.
  5. Turn off Use HDR.
  6. Launch Cyberpunk 2077 again.

This has resolved the black-screen issue for some players using AMD graphics cards, although it isn't a guaranteed fix for every GPU or display.

If it works, you can investigate your Windows and in-game HDR settings separately after confirming that the game launches normally.

Fix 7: Check Incorrect Intel Driver Warnings

Update 2.5 has also produced reports of REDlauncher requesting an Intel graphics driver that doesn't match the player's hardware. For example, a PC with an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card may display a warning referring to Intel Arc drivers.

Don't install an unrelated graphics driver just because the launcher requests it. Check your GPU model in Windows Device Manager and confirm that you're using the correct driver from its manufacturer.

Some players have found that the incorrect warning disappeared after a launcher update or restart. If your graphics drivers are already current and compatible with your hardware, verify the game files and check whether the launcher has updated before attempting a more invasive driver reinstall.

How to Roll Back Cyberpunk 2077 From 2.5 to 2.31

If you depend on older mods that haven't been updated, returning to version 2.31 may be more practical than trying to make every plugin work with 2.5 immediately.

Steam offers an earlier game version through its game properties, allowing you to switch back without searching for unofficial downloads.

Rollback Steps on Steam:
  1. Open your Steam Library.
  2. Right-click Cyberpunk 2077 and open Properties.
  3. Find Game Versions & Betas, or the Betas section depending on your Steam interface.
  4. Select version 2.31 from the available options.
  5. Allow Steam to download the earlier version.
  6. Check your mod compatibility before launching your saved game.

Rolling back means losing access to the new features introduced in Update 2.5 until you upgrade again. You should also avoid opening saves created or updated in version 2.5 with an older game version, since backward save compatibility isn't guaranteed.

Before changing versions or reinstalling, back up your saves from:

%userprofile%\Saved Games\CD Projekt Red\Cyberpunk 2077\

What if Cyberpunk 2077 Still Won't Start?

If none of the earlier fixes works, a clean installation may be necessary. Back up your saves first, then uninstall the game and check the installation directory for leftover mod files before reinstalling.

Reinstalling through Steam alone may leave manually added files behind. That means a fresh download can still encounter the same incompatible mod framework unless you've cleared the remaining third-party files.

For an installation that has never used mods, try launching the game after verification, driver checks, and a REDlauncher reset before resorting to a complete reinstall. If it still fails, contact CD PROJEKT RED technical support with your PC specifications, game version, and any crash messages.

For modded installations, a clean mod profile is the best starting point. For an unmodded game, verifying files and checking the launcher and GPU drivers should come first. If you're getting a black screen with menu audio, testing with HDR disabled is a quick additional check. These approaches isolate different startup problems without requiring you to delete your saves or rebuild your entire installation unnecessarily.
